ANDREW BODEN, WILLIAM BODEN, AND GEORGE I. LEWIS, OF AKRON, IOWA.
WAGON ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,902, dated November 2, 1897.
' Application filed November 27, 1896- Serial No. 613,597.
(No model.)
do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to anovel construction in an attachment for threshing-machines and other agricultural machines that are used in the field and upon uneven ground, the object being to provide a device whereby this machine may be leveled without the' necessity of digging holes in the earth or blocking up the same.
The invention consists inrthe features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a transverse section of the rear end portion of a threshing-machine constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the axle. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the guides and shoulder.
It will be understood, of course, that this invention can be applied to various machines, and although it is shown in connection with a threshing-machine, yet the invention is not limited to such application.
In said drawings, 1 indicates the body or frame of the machine, which is provided on its under side with downwardly-extending guides orhangers 2. These hangers or guides receive the axle 3, which is provided on its sides with shoulders 4, that come in contact with the inner face of the guides and hold the axle firmly in position. The outer faces of these shoulders 4 are curved, so that the axle may be tilted with relationto the frame, as is obvious. Passing through guides 5 on the sides of the body of the same is an operating-rod 6, having a swivel connection at its lower end with the axle. This rod 6 is screwthreaded at its lower portion and engages a nut 7, secured to the body of the machine. The upper end portionof the rod is provided with a longitudinally-sliding ratchet-wheel 9, to be engaged by a ratchet 10. The upper ends of the rods 6 are squared to receive a crank-handle. These rods are placed upon both sides of the device in the manner shown.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a threshing-machine or separator provided with this improvement can be quickly leveled by simply turning the rods 6 in the desired direction to elevate or depress that side of the machine, it being noted that as the rod is turned the body of the machine moves vertically with relation to the axle by reason of the screw-threaded connection between the rod and the body of the machine and the sliding connection between the body of the machine and the axle. By means of the curved faces of the shoulders at a firm con nection is made between these parts, while at the same time one side of the body of the machine maybe higher than the other. It will be seen, further, that by reason of the ratchets and the ratchet-wheel the rod 6 can be held against rotation, which might occur by reason of the jolting in hauling the machine over roads and fields.
Having thus described we claim as new, and ters Patent, is-
l. The combination with the axle of a wheeled vehicle provided with lateral shoulders, of a body mounted thereon and provided with depending guides between which the axle is situated, and upright operating-rods connected with said axle and engaging a nut carried by said body.
2. The combination with the axle of a wheeled vehicle having curved lateral shoulders, of a body portion provided with depending guides between which the said axle is sit uated, and means for moving said body with relation to the axle.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREW BODEN. WILLIAM BODEN. GEORGE I. LEWIS.
