Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
HENRY SAYLER, on sT. PARIS, oi11o.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-SOCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,278, dated October 250, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. SAYLER, of St. Paris, in the county of Champaignand State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVhip-Sockets for Carriages; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters marked thereon, lik'e letters wherever they occur indicating like parts.
To enable others skilled in the arts to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
Figure 1 is an elevation, with the upper portion shown in section. Fig. 2 is a top-plan View and Fig. 3, a side view, with a portion of the lock broken away to show the internal a1 rangement.
My invention consists in providing a whipsocket with a locking device, whereby the whip can be secured in the socket.
A represents the body of the socket, which maybe made of the usual material and form.
To the inside of the socket A, near its top, is secured a circular jaw, 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a correspondingjaw,.n, being attached to a sliding arm, 0, which works through a hole on the opposite side of the socket. A spring, 1, is secured at one end to the socket and at the other to the movable jaw n, by which means the jaw 11 is pressed outward.
A look, B, is secured permanently to the side of the socket in such a position that its bolt a will engage in the notches on the under side of the arm 0, as shown in Fig. l. The bolt 5 slides freely in its bearings m, and is forced upward by a spring, I), so as to keep its upper end in contact with the arm (3, the end of bolt to being beveled to correspond with the inclined notches in 0, whereby the latter can be shoved inward without hinderance from the bolt 0, but cannot be drawn backwithout depressing the bolt a, which can only be done by inserting a key. in the key-hole and turning it until it strikes against the lug e on the bolt a.
To use my improvement it is only necessary to insert the whip in the socket as usual, and push the stem 0 in until the whip is clasped and firmly held between the two jaws o n, which prevent it from being withdrawn from the socket, and thus it may be left in safety. When required for use the key is inserted and the arm 0 released, which permits the whip to be withdrawn at will.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim is A whip-socket provided with the clamping jaws and a lock, when arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY SAYLER. Witnesses:
