ARTHUR M. TYLER, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,458, dated October 26, 1897.
Application tiled April 2 9, l 8 9 '7.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR M. TYLER, of Richmond, in the county of I-Ienrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a sash-fastener which will lock automatically when the sashes are closed by either raising the upper sash or lowering the lower sash, the construction and arrangement of the parts presenting a lock of this general character which is simple, cheap, and effective.
With the above objects in view the invention consists in providing the meeting-rails of the sashes with a lock comprising a swinging canrdog carried by the lower rail of the upper sash on a shaft having a flattened side and turning-wheel and a projecting flexible arm carried by the upper rail of the lower sash, which engages the flattened portion of the shaft and acts to automatically throw the cam-dog into its locked position. The invention further consists in the particular construction and arrangement of the parts.
In the following specication I have entered into a detail description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to letters or numerals thereon which designate the different parts, and what I consider to be the novel features of construction are specically set forth in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the parts forming the lock. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the plate which carries the flexible arm. Fig. 4 is a de-k tail View of the support for the swinging camdog. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the shaft.
The part of the lock which is carried by the upper sash and includes the swinging camdog consists of a base-plate l, having a projection which supports a swinging cam-dog 2, the said projection presenting side pieces 3 3, between which. the cam-dogv is pivoted, and a stop 4, which limits the rearward movement of the dog when lowered, its backward movement when raised being limited by the Serial No. 634,444. (No model.)
end wall 5 of the projection. The cam-dog is rigidly connected to a shaft 6, which bears in transverse openings 7 in the side pieces 3 3, and has aprojecting portion 8, forming a fiat surface so disposed with relation to the carndog that it will be horizontal and at the forward part of the shaft when the said cam-dog is thrown to thelimit of its upward movement. At the end of the shaft, opposite the enlarged portion thereof, is attached a knob or milled wheel 9, by which the shaft is manually operated when the sashes are to be raised or lowered. The portion of the shaft which is automatically operated to lower the dog is preferably disposed at the left-hand side of the cam-dog support, while the knob is located on the opposite side thereof. The other part of the lock or that which is carried by the upper rail of the lower sash consists of a plate 10, having a raised portion 11 at one end forming a seat or socket l2, in whichis placed an arm 13, projecting beyond the sash, the said arm being held in place by a top plate 14 and machine-screw 15, which confines the parts. Adjoining the enlarged portion of the plate 10 the upper surface thereof is roughened, and in connection therewith the large or free end of. the cam-dog is also roughened, as shown. The plates forming the base of both parts of the lock are provided with countersunk holes to receive the retainingscrews by which they are fastened to the meeting-rails of the window-sashes.
In attaching the parts to the sashes the projecting flexible arm 13 will be so arranged with respect to the enlarged or flattened portionof the shaft which carries the camsdog that it will engage said flattened portion when the sashes are manipulated. In a locked position the dog is lowered and the larger or free end thereof will bear against the plate 10 and prevent the said sashes being moved, thereby forming a lock which is very secure and cannot be released by passing an implement up between the meeting-rails. To release the lock, the shaft is turned manually by means of the wheel 9 to throw the camdog in an upright position, and a movement of either sash will allow the arm to'pass by the shaft, an opposite movement of the sash causing the arm to engage the flattened projecting portion of said shaft and throw the IOO cam-dog forward, so that it will lower by gravity and engage the plate of the other sash. It will therefore be seen that by the particular construction and arrangement of the parts forming the lock the sashes are automatically locked when closed and the operation of releasing the cam-dog or lock is readily and conveniently accomplished. It will also be noted that a lock constructed as herein shown and described provides one that is strong and durable.
Instead of having the end of the cam-dog roughened and a corresponding surface given to the plate l0 it is obvious that the said parts could be provided with teeth which would cause a positive engagement.
Other modications or changes could be made in the construction without sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, and I therefore do not wish to-limit myself to what is herein shown and described, but reserve the right to make such modifications and changes as are within the spirit and scope of my claims. j
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a sash-fastener, the combination of a support, a cam-dog pivotally mounted in said support, a lateral projection movable With said dog, and relatively-xed means adapted to engage. said projection to actuate the dog, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A sash-lock comprising a support adapted to be attached to the upper face of the meeting-rail of a sash, a cam-dog pivotally mounted in said support and mounted to swing past the joint between the meetingrails of the two sashes and to be thrown and held by gravity in inverted position, a lateral projection movable with said dog, and flexible means adapted to engage the projection to actuate the dog, substantially as described.
3. In a sash-fastener, the combination of av jection; together with an arm projecting from the other sash, substantially as shown and described.
4., In a sash-fastener, the combination of a support attached to one of the sashes, a shaft journaled in the support and having a flattened portion or projection, a cam-dog connected to the shaft and limited in its movements in both directions, a plate attached to the-other sash, and a ileXible arm secured to the plate and projecting beyond the sash, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a sash-fastener, the combination of a support presenting stops, a shaft journaled therein and having a fiattened portion or projection, a cam-dog attached to the shaft and limited in its movements by the stops, and a knob or wheel secured to one end of the shaft; together with a plate attached to the other sash, and a flexible arm projecting from the plate, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a sash-fastener, the combination with a cam-dog carried by one of the sashes and attached -to a shaft having a flattened portion or projection, of a plate attached to the other sash and provided with a socket or seat, and a ilexible arm secured in the socket or seat and projecting beyond the sash, the end of the cam-dog and part of the plate with which it engages being roughened, substantially as shown and described..
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR M. TYLER.
