HENRY EQ'PARsoiv, OF BROOKLYN. NEW YORK.
BLAST-PIPE FOR STEEL-FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,204, dated October 19, 1897.
Application filed March24, 1 8 97.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. PARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blast-Pipes for Steel-Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to certain improvements in the blast-pipes for steel, reverberatory, and other furnaces by which the blast-supply of a fan-blower can be augmented by the blast produced by a steamblowerarranged in the blast-pipe, said steamblower being located in proximity to an opening in the blast-pipe, closed by a suitable door, so that the steam-blower may be used in conjunction with the fan-blower, or used without the fan-blower on opening the door, as required by the furnace; and-the invention consists of a blast-pipe for steel and other furnaces, and in which pipe is arranged a steam-blower having a number of nozzles, a steam-supply pipe for said'bloweiysaid blower being located in front of an opening in the blast-pipe, and a door for closing said opening, so that a fan-blower can be used in connection with the steam-blower, or the latter alone.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of a blast-pipe for furnaces, showing the position of the steam-blower with respect to the air-supply opening in the blast-pipe. Fig. 2
is a vertical transverse section on line 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation showing my blast-pipe in connection with a blower and furnace.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the blast-pipe of a steel or other furnace F,which blast-"pipe is connected as usual at one end with a fan-blower G, by which the blast is supplied to the furnace. It is necessary in steel-furnaces that the melting mass should be subjected to a blast greater in intensity than that supplied by a fan-blower, and for this purpose a steam-blower B is arranged in the blast-pipe and connected with a steam- Serial No. 628,948. (No model.)
supply pipe B, said steam-blower being constructed with radial supply-pipes and a number of steam-jet nozzles 19, and being of that type for which Letters Patent were granted to me heretofore, No. 582,483, dated May 11, 1897.
Adjacent to the steam-blower B, but back of the same, is arranged, in the upper part of the blast-pipe A, an oblong opening a, which can be opened or closed by means of a sliding door 0, guided in exterior transverse Ways (1 on the blast-pipe, said ways being preferably made of cast metal in one integral casting with a central length of the blastpipe, in which the steam-blower B is arranged. The arrangement of the air-supply opening, and the sliding door for opening and closing the same, in the blast-pipe, near the steamblower, is forthe purpose of permitting, when the said opening a is closed, either the use of a steam-blower alone, or inconjunction with a fan-blower when an intense blast is desired, as in this case the air is propelled forward with greater force in the blast-pipe by the action of the steam-jets emitted by the steam-jet nozzles, so that, by this association,
the heat in the furnace is increased and a temperature more favorable to the combustion of the iron and steel is obtained. When it is desired to use the steam-blower alone, the sliding door is opened, the fan-blower stopped, and the air drawn in directly from the atmosphere through the opening a and forced by the steam-blower to the furnace, while when the steam-supply pipe of the steam-blower is shut off and the sliding door closed the ordinary blast produced by the fanblower can be used. In this manner the blast for steel and other furnaces can be increased by a simple and very eifective means and a more effective blast obtained. An important effect obtained is that the oxidizing and scaling of the steel is prevented.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with a steel or other furnace, of a blower, ablast-pipe connecting the blower with the furnace, said blast-pipe being provided with an opening intermediate 0f the blower and furnace, a steam-blower located in said blast-pipe between the opening and the furnace, and a door for opening PARSON' 5 or closing said opening, substantially as set Vitnesses:
forth. GEO. W. JAEKEL,
my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as CARL KABLE.
