M. PLATHER. SUPPORTING DEVICE FOR SHAPER 0R METAL PLANER TABLES. No. 591,833. Patented Oct. 19,1897. F
Nrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARK FLATHER, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
SUPPORTING DEVICE FOR-SHAPER'OR M ETA-L-PLANER TABLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,833, dated October 19, 1897.
Application filed October 2 6, 18 9 6.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARK FLATHER, of Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Support-ingDevices for Shaper or Metal-Planer Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved supporting device for the work-table of metal planing or shaping machines, its purpose being to support the outer end of the work-table and prevent the same from being deflected downward by the cutting-tool when the ma: chine is in operation. The advantages I claim for the supporting device herein shown are, being attached to the cross-rail upon which is mounted the slide-block which carries the work-table, it travels up and down with said cross-rail and is therefore self-adjusting and always in position to support the work-table without attention from the operator. Owing to its peculiar form and method of attachment its point of contact is always directly under the cutting-tool, thereby supporting the work-table at the point where the work is being done.
I will now more fully explain the construction and operation of my improved device, reference being had to the drawings, which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a section of a metal planing or shaping machine, showing the cross-rail, slideblock with work-table attached, and a side elevation of my improved supporting device attached to said cross-rail. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of same with a portion of the top of metal planing or shaping machine cut off. Fig. 3 is a plan of my improved supporting device detached.
Similar letters and symbols refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents my improved supporting device, which is attached to two lugs on the bottom of the cross-rail B by means of the two machine-screws B B at two of its inner ends. Its outer end is provided with the adjusting-screw C and the bearing-block D. Said bearing-block D is made of hardened steel.
SeriaINo. 610,084. (No model.)
E is the work-table, which is provided with a bearing-surface on its under side near the outer edge to receive the bearing-block D, and has a free lateral movement on the same. The said work-table E is attached to the slideblock F. Said slide-block F is attached to' and has a free longitudinal movement on the cross-rail B.
G G represent slides integral with the column of the metal planing or shaping machine, upon which is mounted the cross-rail B in such manner that it can be adjusted vertically by means of the screw H, which has a threaded bearing in the projection I, said projection I being attached to or integral with the column of said metal planing or shaping machine.
K is a bearing on the front of the projection I to receive the portion L of the supporting device, and upon which it has a free vertical movement.
The operation of my improved supporting device is as follows: When the work-table E is raised or lowered, the portion L of the supporting device A slides uponthe bearing K, the bearing-block D retaining its contact with the bottom of said work-table E. In adjust ing the work-table E longitudinally upon the slide-rail B, through the medium of the slideblock F, the bearing on the under side of the work-table E slides upon the bearing-block D. The supporting device A is vertically movable, but has no lateral movement.
I do not confine myself to the precise form of supporting device herein shown, as the form and method of attachment may be somewhat Varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having fully shown my improved device, what I claim is- 1. In a metal planing or shaping machine, the combination of a supporting device attached to the under side of the cross-rail, a slide-block movably attached to said crossrail and longitudinally movable thereon, a work table attached to said slide block, a bearing on the under side of said work-table, an adjustable bearing-block secured in the outer end of said supporting device and means for adj ustingthe same, and an arm projecting downward which has a bearing on a projecon its lower end, and a projection attached to the column of said metal planing orshap- A ing machine, on the outer face of which said I 5 bearing slides, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 15th day of August, A. D. 1896.
MARK FLATHER. WVitnesses:
R. P. ELLIOTT, 'JAs. T. GREELEY.
