CHARLES L. lrOElflRlNG, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
MOLDING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,765, dated December v18, 1888.
Application led February 3, 1888. Serial No. 262,902. No model.)
To aU whom it 'mf/,y concern;
e it known that LCHARLES L. GOEHRING, of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding-Machines; andl. do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
My present invention relates to improve ments upon the apparatus or form of mechanism disclosed in my application, No. 260,098, and constiti'iting a part or portion of the main system described in another application, No. 260,097; and my said invention consists in the novel and improved combination and ar rangements of the devices for effecting' the oscillations of the arbor about its pivotal point of support and their co-operative relations with other parts of the system, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the acconipanying drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of the mechanism to which my present invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sect-ion. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing' the manner of supporting and adjusting the pi vot of the actuating-lever. Fig. ei is a sectional view on line a' Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a front view of the arbor-supporting slide. Fig. 6 is a side elevation, part-ly in section, of a portion of the cutting mechanism, showing' a driving mechanism for accommodating the various movements of the arbor.
Similar letters and figures of reference in the several igures indicate the same parts.
My present invention and improvements as applied and used in connection with the molding-machine described in my prior application relate more especially to the means for effecting and controlling the oscillations of the cutter-head, operating separately or in conjunction with devices for reciprocating said cutter-head laterally or vertically or simultaneo-usly in both of said directions with respect to the line of movement of the material or board operated upon. As described and illustrated in said applications, the board or other material operated upon is fed or advanced positively and continuously in a right l line and the several cutting mechanisms are so connected to the driving mechanism that their controlling devices shall at all times be caused to move in unison with the feed-controlling devices and at a speed proportional to the latter.
The particular variety of cutting mechanism to which this invention more particularly has reference is that employed for producing the ornamental or other designs upon the face or horizontal surface of the material, the various movements, and more especially the transverse reciprocations and oscillating movements of the cutter-head, being timed and proportioned to correspond with the reciprocations of the edging-cutter or those producing the general outline of the edges of the board. For a more detailed description of the other co-operating elements reference is made to my before-mentioned prior applications.
The letter A designates a portion of the frame-work constituting guides or ways in which the carriage B is supported, said carriage being `controlled in its vertical movements by cams driven in unison with the rolls or other feeding mechanism.
The carriage Bis constructed in two sections movable the one upon the other for adjusting the height of the cutting devices relatively to the cam-surfaces for raising or reciprocating the carriage. The adjustment of the two sections may be effected by a screw-connection, b, and in addition to the latter a transverse clamping-bolt, b', or equivalent device may be employed, when desired, for securing the two sections firmly in position after adjustment.
The upper section of the carriage B is provided With a top or platen, B2, slotted, as at b2, for the accommodation of the driving-belt, and provided with an arched brace, h3, at or near its forward end, and furnished with transverse guides or ways b4. Supported to reciprocate in these guides is a carriage or slide, C, formed in two sections, adjustable by a screw, c, the one upon the other, the rear end or section being provided with an abutment or roller, c, maintained in contact with an actuating-cam, C, which latter is driven in IOO unison with the feeding devices, as explained in connection with. the lower cams.
Near the forward end ot' the slide C is formed an opening, CX, to accommodate the drivingbelt, and webs or strengthening-ribs c2 are applied or formed on the slide opposite the said opening;I eX.
Beneath the slide C is located the oscillat- 'ing arbor-frame 1 ),pivotally attached to said slide at or near its innel' or forward end, the rear portion ot said arlmr-t'ran'ie being' supported upon a segmental or e(ulivalentbrackct or guide, dl".
The parts thus tar described do not dil't'er, essentially, in con struction and operation 'from those illustrated in my bet'orementioned application, No. 2til'l,otlS-that is to say, the arbor-'trame carrying' the cutter located beneath and in line with its pivot oseillates, while its suppo1'ting'-'trame is recilnocated transversely of the line ot' Yl'eed ot' the material, and at the same time a vertical movement Ais communicated to the slide by the cams acting' beneath its supportingl carriage, the several movements referred to being.; timed and proportioned to the movements olthe feeding devices and the passage beneath the cutters ot the material to be operated upon.
The arboisl'rame D is provided with bearings d, suliporting' the arbor 1),the pulley d being' located between said bearings and the cutter-head l)2 beyond the outer bearing)l and beneath the pivotal point, so as to bring the principal cutter 'in the center of oscillation; and in order that the cutter-head may be ad'- j usted with respect to this center of oscillation the pin or pivot 1,tor connecting' the arbor-trame and its supportiugr-slide, is adjustably attached to the a1bor-trame-as, :tor example, by forming a T-e'roove, e, in said t'rame and insertingI therein the head ot bolt E. ln order to atlord a better support Ior the cuttershaft D and prevent it from springing, l mount a bearing, d2, on the .tm-ward extension of arbor-trame D and apply Vit to the arbor beyond the cuttcr-hwul, as shown, thus providinj.;l three bearings t'or the arbor--one at each end and the third between the pulley and cutter-l1ea l--said bearin being' limated on the side ol' the arbor to which the most pressure is a]n ilied-that is to say, opposite the material to be inrerated upon and upon the sid e toward the drivin `:g-pullev--and lin order that the cutter-head maybe conveniently taken ott, inspected, and replaced the said outer bearing is detachably and ad justably secured to the arbor-frame D.
To the pin E is secured an arm, l, to which the actuating devices tor controlling' the oscillations ot' the arbor-frame are attached, and in i'n'der that said arm maybesecurely clamped upon said holt and the latter at the same time be Irmly attached to the arbor-t rame a sleeve, L?, is interposedbetween and bears at opposite ends against; the arm l and arbor-lraine or washers resting thereon, and the pivot-lmlt E passes through said sleeve and is clamped and held in position by a detachable or adjustable device-such as a nut, -l--\vl1e1'eby the arm l and arbor-trame maybe secured together by the bolt and clamped upon the sleeve il without producing' excessive lrictional contact with the slide C, as no matter how much pressure is brought to bear to clamp these parts together the sleeve 2 will turn t'reely in its bearingI in slide (I To the arm l, preferably secured in a position parallel with the arbor, is I )ivotally attached a link, 5, whose opposite end is pivoted on alever, l, tulerumed, as at 7, and bearingl against; the outer end ol' a bar, S, mounted in.ways upon the carriage ll, with its inner end in contact with the cam tl. The connections betwcen the link 5 and arm l and level' o are preferably made adjustable, and the t'nlcrum pin or bolt T is made adjustable both lonc'itudinaflly and laterally ot' the lever ll to provide for variationsand changes in the proportions of the levers and the angular position ot' the parts. ',lhus, in the illustration c'iven ot' these leatures the pins l(l,'upon which the link 5 is pivoted, are made adjust able in slots ,lfl in the arm 'l and lever l, while the pin T is adjustablysecured in aslot, l2, formed in a bracket, lil, the latter su pported in ways l-l on the'cafrriag'e ll and moved 'l'or adjustment by a screw, The angular position ot' the lever t3 may, moreover, be adjusted or txed through the instruimmtality ot the pivoted 'bearincl lll and screw 17; but these elements are mainly employed Alor a dil'lerent purpose-that is to say, to compensate for the longitudinal movement ot" the bar S upon the lever, tor as said bar is reciprocated in aline tangential to the arc in which the level' oseillates the pointoli' contact is constantly shi tted, tending to increase or diminish the leverage and in proportiiim thereto the speed; but by providingl an inclined surface Ior the bar to act upon and properly proport ioninc' the angle ot' inclination to the lateral movement ot the point ot' contact the variation in speed will be compensated t'or and the lever caused to oscillate with a practically unit'orm speed.
Any suitable li'orm olf driving' mechanism competent to accommodate the various movements and arlljustments ot' the arbor may be employed tor dri vine; the cuttcr-luaul. while the latter is being recipri'icated. ln Fic'. (5 l have illustrated one t'orm ot' mecllanism ot' this character, the same consisting ol a yoke or frame, Q), movable vertically in guides p', and held elevated by a yielding' tension de- TIO vice, such as weightyandleverpi. lheyoke j) is provided with bearings I'or a shaft, p?, held parallel with and above slide (l, said sha't't carrying' a parallel faced pulley, p, and a crown or convex. pulley, p". lhe pulley p p, The vertical and lateral movements of the arbor-frame are compensated for by the vertical play ot' the yoke.
