NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
CLARENCE W. HOBBS, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HOBBS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING ROUND OR OVAL BLANKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 670,636, dated March 26, 1901.
Application filed April 9, 1898.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLARENCE W. HoBBs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Cutting Round or Oval Blanks for Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings forming a part of the same.
The object of my invention is to providea machine by which blanks can be cut from sheets of cardboard either round, oval,or elliptical designed for the covers or bottoms of paper boxes which are round, oval, or elliptical in shape; audit consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter de' scribed, and set forth in the annexed claims.
Figure l of the drawings represents a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention for cutting round, oval, or elliptical blanks for paper boxes. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the machine with the adjustable frame F for holding the cardboard removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the sliding table D, representing the same in proper position for cutting an oval blank from a sheet of cardboard. Fig. 4 is a side view of my improved machine with the clamping-plates raised in order to disconnect the adjustable frameF from the sliding table. Fig. 5 is a top view of the sliding table D, held in, position to cut an elliptical blank from a sheet of cardboard. Fig. 6 is a top view of the sliding table D with the slotted disk J removed. Fig. 7 is a view of the under side of the slotted disk J. Fig, 8 is a sectional view of the sliding table D on line 8 8, Fig. 6. Fig. 9 is a vertical central sectional view of the stud adj ustably held in the transverse slot of the sliding table, and Fig. 10 is a vertical central sectional view of the stud held in a fixed position in the sliding table D.
Similar letters refer tosimilar parts in the different figures.
Referring to the drawings, A denotes the bed of the machine, upon which the operative parts are supported.
A denotes an upright stand supported upon one end of the bed A and containing the journal-bearings for a pair of shafts B B, located Serial N0. 676,997. (No model.)
one above the other in the same vertical plane and carrying the rotary cutters B B The shafts B B are connected by gears B B and are rotated by a crank B attached to the lower shaft B. The bed A is provided with ways A on its upper surface and a central longitudinal slot A Resting upon the bed A is a plate C, capable of sliding lengthwise the bed on the ways A and of being clamped in position by a screw C, engaging a nut C bearing against the under side of the bed and having a lever-handle C The plate C is provided with a way C extending transversely across the plate C and serving as a guide for a sliding table D, which is provided with a slot D,inclosing the bolt C, by which the sliding table D is clamped in position on the plate 0.
Supported upon the bed A and capable of sliding thereon on the ways A is a stand E, provided with a foot E, which rests upon the upper surface of the bed. Screwed into the upper end of the stand E is a bolt E which forms a pintle upon which the U -shaped frame F is hinged. The frame F carries in each of its arms F F the spindles F F having their axes in alinement and carrying the clamping-plates F F, between which a sheet of cardboard G is clamped.
. The spindles F F when the sheet of cardboard is clamped between them are capable of being rotated about a common axis, thereby rotating the sheet of cardboard G against the cutting edges of the rotary cutters B B The table D is provided with a boss D having a projecting stud D which fits a corresponding recess (not shown) in the lower end of. the spindle F thereby forming the center upon which the spindle is rotated by means of a hand-wheel F In order to cut a round blank from the sheet of cardboard, the sliding table D is moved on the plate C transversely to the bed A until the stud D is brought into the center of the bed or in the same vertical plane as the axes of the rotating cutters B B The plate 0 is also moved longitudinally on the bed A until the center of the stud D is brought the proper distance from the vertical plane of the cutters B B to produce a round piece of cardboard of the required diameter, and the plate C and sliding table D are then clamped to the bed by means of the nut 0 bolt C, and hand lever 0 The stand E is moved along on the bed A in order to bring the axes of the spindles F F directly over the center of the stud D and the spindle F is then lowered upon the stud D as represented in Fig. l. A sheet of cardboard G is placed between the clampingplates F F", and the upper clamping-plate F is pressed against the cardboard by raising the bent lever H and curved link H, which has a swiveled connection with the upper end of the spindle F to allow the spindle F to rotate. The rotation of the spindles F and F by means of the hand-wheel F causes the cardboard G, held between the clamping plates F F", to be rotated against the cutting edges of the cutters B B thereby trimming the edge of the cardboard into a blank of circular form whose radius is equal to the distance between the cutting edges of the cutters B B and the axes of the spindles F F Placed upon the upper surface of the sliding table D is an oval-shaped frame I, held between a rib I and a pin I projecting from the upper surface of the table. The frame I is provided with two holes I I in its opposite sides, which are adapted to receive a pair of studs F F which project from the lower side of the hand-wheel F In order to cut an oval form, the sliding plate D is moved transversely on the plate 0 in order to bring the pin I over the center of the bed or in the same vertical plane as the axes of the rotating cutters B B and the plate C is adjusted longitudinally on the bed A to bring the oval frame the proper distance from the rotating cutters. The spindle F is then raised off the stud D as represented in Fig. 4E, and the studs F F are placed in the holes I I the longitudinal movement of the stand E along the bed A and the swinging movement of the frame F on the pintle E allowing this to be done. The sheet of cardboard is then clamped between the plates F F by the action of the lever H, as above described, and is rotated by means of the hand wheel F causing the frame I to be moved between the rib I and pin 1 thereby carrying. the axes of the spindles F F away from and toward the cutters B B as determined by the shape of the frame I, and causing the sheet of cardboard to be cut into an oval form, its major and minor axes having the same proportion as the major and minor axes of the oval frame I. The size of the oval is determined, however, by the distance of the plate 0 from the vertical plane of the rotating cutters B B As the spindle F is turned in the operation of cutting an oval blank the stand E slides back and forth on the bed A and the frame F swings about the pintle E to permit the distance between the axes of the spindles F I and the cutting edges of the cutters B B to vary. If it is desired to change the proportion between the major and minor axes of the blank, it is accom plished by replacing the oval frame I by one having different proportions.
In order to cut an elliptical blank from a sheet of cardboard, the studs F F upon the hand-wheel F are placed in the holes J in a disk J, which rests upon the upper surface of the sliding table D and is provided on its under side with two T- shaped slots J J extending diametrically across the under side of the disk J and at right angles to each other. One of the T-shaped slots incloses the head of a stud K, which is held in a fixed position in the table D, and the other of the T- shaped slots incloses the head of a stud K, which is adjustably held in a T- shaped slot L, extending across the sliding table D. In order to cut an elliptical blank of a predetermined size, the sliding table D is moved along on the plate 0 to bring the disk J opposite the center of the rotating cutters B B as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and the plate 0 is adj ustably attached to the bed A at the proper distance from the rotating cutters B B to secure the required diameter of the blank. The sheet of cardboard is clamped between the plates F F and is rotated by the hand-wheel F with the studs F 13 inserted in the holes J of the disk J, causing the disk J to rotate with the spindle; but the disk J is held upon the two studs K and K, Working in the right-angled slots J 2 J The motion of the disk J will be an eccentric m0tion-that is, the distance of the center of disk J from the vertical plane containing the cutting edges of the cutters B B will vary, so that the curved line out around the cardboard as it is rotated will be an ellipse, producing an elliptical blank.
