SOUNDING- BOARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591 ,759, dated October 12, 1897. Application filed April 23,1897. Serial No. 633,464. (No model.)

Be it known that I, HUBERT A. HAMBLOOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union Hill, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sounding-Boards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a double sounding-board for pianos and other musical instruments, the two sounding-boards being suitably spaced or separated and one of said sounding-boards having an opening in which is placed a resonator or filling-piece, as set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which-- Figure l is a rear View of a piano-case with secondary sounding-board. Fig. 2 is a side elevation sectioned along x 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the secondary soundingboard. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional side elevation similar to Fig. 2, enlarged.

The sounding-board 1, supporting bridge or bridges 2 for strings 3, remains as heretofore.

Back of the sounding-board 1 extend the beams or frame parts 4, 5, and 6 of the pianocasing. To the frame parts 4 and 5 between the main sounding-board l and the back beams or uprights 6 are secured the edges of a second or supplemental sounding-board 7. This sounding-board '7 has a cut-out portion into which is placed a filling board, plate, or

' disk 8. This inlay 8 is free at its edges and at its center has a round hole 9 and is supported at such central part by a bow 10, having stem or bolt 11 secured to or carried by a back beam 6 or by a block or cross-piece 12 at such back pieces 6.

The secondary sounding-board '7 is firmly or rigidly or solidly attached or glued at its edges to frame-pieces of the case, and the opening in said secondary sounding-board is of such size as to leave the disk or resonator 8 inserted into said opening free at its edge or free to swing or vibrate. The bow 10, supporting the disk or resonator at about its center, straddles or clears the soundhole 9 to leave the latter clear for the passage of sound. This arrangement of double sounding-board has been found to give capacity for producing a powerful tone with long-continued vibrations or sustaining power, and when applied to suchinstruments as upright pianos the latter will be given a quality of tone similar to grand pianos without that metallic quality so much disliked in a piano.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A piano or musical instrument having a main and a secondary sounding-board, and a resonator placed into a cut-out portion of the secondary sounding-board substantially as described.

2. A piano or musical instrument having a main and a secondary sounding-board, and a resonator having a vibratory or free edge and placed into a cut-out portion of the secondary sounding-board substantially as described. I

3. A piano or musical instrument having a main and a secondary sounding-board, and a resonator placed into a cut-out portion of the secondary sounding-board, said secondary sounding-board being firmly or rigidly secured at its edges vsubstantially as described.

4. A pianoor musical instrument having a main and a secondary sounding-board, and a resonator placed into a cut-out portion of the secondary sounding-board, said secondary sounding-board being firmly or rigidly secured at its edges and said resonator being supported at its center portion, the edge or outer part of the resonator being left free substantially as described.

5. A piano or musical instrument having a main and a secondary sounding-board, and a resonator placed into a cut-out portion of the secondary sounding-board, said secondary sounding-board being firmly or rigidly secured at its edges and said resonator being supported at its center portion, the edge or outer part of the resonator being left free and said resonator having a sound-opening and a bow-shaped support made to engage the resonator about said opening substantially as described.
