Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
N. B. WHITE, OF SOUTH DEDHAM, MASSAOHUSETTS, ASSIGNOB TO HIMSELF AND HENRY B. BAKER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR FORMING THE EYES 0F BED-SPRINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,145, dated October '23, 1866.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON B. VHITE, of South Dedham, in the county ot' Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Machine for Forming the Slat-Holders or Eyes of Bedstead-S prin gs; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top view; Fig. 2, a side elevation of a bedstead-spring, with its eye or slatholder as formed by the aid of my invention, such spring being essentially the same as that described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 51,516, dated December 12, 1865, and granted to D. and lV. Manuel. Fig. 3 is a top view, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal section of the machine. Fig. 5 is an inner-side view of its larger plate; Fig. 6, an inner-side view of its lesser plate or jaw.
In Figs. l and 2 the body of the spring A is shown as conoidal in form, or, in other words, is a conoidal spiral, terminating at its apex in a straight extension, a., and at its base in a Slat-holder, B, eye, or prolongation, to receive the bedstead-slat, and for fixing the spring thereto.
The machine, as exhibited in the drawings, substantially consists of two plates or jaws, C D, a pin or stud, E, and two shoulders, F G, arranged as therein represented.
The stud E extends from the inner side of the plate C, and into a corresponding hole, a, made in the plate D. The said plate D projects beyond the plate O in manner as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and has two shoulders, F and G, formed upon it at its opposite edges, in manner as exhibited in Fig. 3.
Another stud, b,-also extends from the plate G into a hole, d, in the plate D, the purpose of such stud and hole being to aid in keeping the two plates in their proper positions with respectto each other.
In employing the machine for the purpose for which it is designed the two plates O D are to be placed between the jaws of a vise, or they may have applied to them other means of clamping them upon the wire of the spring when placed between them.
The base coil of the spring, as above mentioned, prior to the formation of its slat-holding eye, is to be inserted between the two plates C D, and they are to be clamped firmly upon it. This having been done, that portion of the wire which is to compose the eye or the adjacent edge of the plate D, and toward v its opposite edge at the shoulder F. Next, the wire is to be bent against the shoulder F, and around the next adjacent edge ot' the plate D, and over and down, in manner` as shown in Fig. 2.
This completes the eye as generally made; but in order that the point or end of the wire may not catch upon and scratch the woodof the slat, I form in the lower plate a recess, e, upon which I lay the part f of the eye, and, by means of a hammer struck upon the said part f, I bend it a little into the recess, thus causing the bearing of the part f on the slat to be about at the middle of the said part f.
` After the eye may have been completed it may readily be drawn oii' the plate I) by -sliding it on the said plate in a direction away from the two shoulders thereof.
To facilitate the bending of the part f around the edge of the plate D a tubular rod, bar, or lever may be employed, the part f being inserted in the extremity of the bore ot' the tube or lever. Such tube will serve as a handle and a means of readily bending the part f about the said edge. The front end of the plate D is recessed, as shown at h, in order to enable the lever or tube to turn the part j' down upon the plate and into its requi-v site position.
The machine above described, for forming or aiding in forming the slats-holders or eyes of the bedstead-springs, above mentioned, is of milch advantage and-operates with great success.
I claim- I. The combination of the two plates or jaws O D, the stud E, and the shoulder G, arranged substantially as described.
2. The combination of the two plates or j aws O D, the stud E, the shoulder G, and the shoulder F, arranged substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the recess 71J with the shoulders F and G, and the stud E, applied to the two plates U D, as specified.
4. The combination of the plate D with the bending-recess c, arranged in it, as and for the purpose specified.
N. B. WHITE.
