Description

J. C. LONGSHORE.
Lid; Lifier. No. 59,131. Patented 0m. 23, 1866.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. C. LONGSHORE, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN LONGSHORE, OF THE SAME PLACE.
STOVE-COVER LIFT-ER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59, [31, dated October 23, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. O. LONGSHORE, of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Oombined Stove-Lid Lifter, Pinchers, Pan, Pot, Sad-Iron,'&c., Lifter and Hammer, and Tack- Puller and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use'the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The drawing is a perspective view of my invention.
My invention consists in the combination in one implement of several articles in constant use about a kitchen, to wit: a stove-lid lifter, pinchers, pot, sad-iron, 850., lifter, hammer, and tack-puller. V
A B designate the two levers of the pinchers, whose jaws are lettered D E. The lever B has a wooden handle upon it, (letter 0,) and this is to be considered the handle proper of the tool.
D is the stove-lid lifter. The back of this feature of the tool is rounding, and the end of the same is so formed that it can be used for lifting all kinds of stove-lids, which feature is not found in a majority of the stove-lid lifters now in use, as they are generally adapted to particular kinds of stove-lids.
In the end of the stove-lid lifter D a notch is cut to constitute a tack-puller, a, and it can be efficiently used for the purpose.
E is the under jaw of the pinchers, and this is provided with transverse grooves, so as to have a better hold upon anything. This feature of the combined tool, aside from the, ordinary use of pinchers, will be found most convenient for lifting pies out of an oven or any hot dish, for opening stove doors, &c. When the device is used for a stove-lid lifter the jaw is to be opened, so as to the better insert the end of the part D into the socket or under the bar of a stove-lid.
F and G are two hooks. That F is bent up morethat is, itis more hooked than that G- and it is intend ed chiefly for catching over the edges of bread-pans and pudding-dishes, &c., in which case the lower jaw of the pinche'rs is closed and its back rests against the pan or other dish and causes the hook to retain a firm hold, as can be readily understood. The hook F is intended chiefly for catching under the handles of sad-irons, pots, &c., and when in use the tool is held in a nearly vertical position.
H is the tack-hammer. This does not add in any material degree to the weight of the tool, and yet it furnishes a most convenient article in a combination-tool.
Thus I combine in one implement many tools needed for constant use about a kitchen, thereby causing a saving in the expense necessary to purchase a tool of each description, besides having all the tools in one convenient article.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a stove-lid lifter, D, pinchers A B, pot, dish, sad-iron, 850., lifters F G, hammer H, and tack -pullers a, all in one implement, constructed substantially as shown and described.
