SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 590,934, dated September 28, 1897'.
4 Application filed July 30,1896. Serial No. 601,028. (No model.)
o alt 'LU/tom, t may concern:
Haverhill, county of Essex, Stateof Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Skivingddachines, o f which the following description, in connection with the accompanyparts. i
This invention has for its object the pr'oduction of a novel skiving-machine more especially adapted to skive heel-lifts or springholder which may be turned more or less in or on a circular seat, so that the inclination Y ofthe bevel to be cut may be readily changed.
Figure l, in front elevation, represents a skiving-machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a left-hand side elevation thereof; Fig. 3, a partial section in the line no, Fig. 2; and Figs. 4t and 5 showthe cutting ends of the blades or knives which my machine. Fig. 6 shows the gage a and part of the table, and Fig. 7 shows aheellift with its end skived.
The framework A has at one side a projecting hub 2, (shown in Fig.` 1,) which receives a stud on which turns the sleeve of pulley A2, said sleeve nhaving a pinion A3,
(shown `by dotted lines,) which engages a larger toothed gear A4, fast onlthe end of a shaft B, extended through a hollow sleevelike bearing B at the upper end of a plate B2, xed to the frame A by suitable bolts B3, the left-hand-A end of 1 said shaft carrying a feed-roll B4, which is rotated at speed. The stud on which the fast pulley rotates is extended far enough to also sustain a loose pulley A5, itbeing kept from slipping olf the end of said stud in any usual way.
The shaft B has a pinion B5, which engages a pinion C of Ycorresponding size on andV rotates a shaft C', having a second feed-roll CX, said shaft lying in a hollow tube-bearing C2 at the outer end of a lever C3, mounted on a rod C, sustained by ears C5 of the bed, the outer end of said lever being acted upon by a strong spring D, made adjustable as to its ing drawings, is a specification, like lettersl and iigures on the drawin gs representing like? may bel used in- D 1 strengthpsaid spring acting to keep the pin- Be 1t known that I, JAMES N. MOULTON, ofl
ionsKB5 and C in engagement, yet allowing Athem to yield slightly, `yet keep a firm bight on the piece of l`eatlie1bein g passed between them to be sk ived, the approach of the rolls toward eachother being adjusted by an adjusting-device D',s hown as a screw carried by the lever C3. l
The front of the machine has attached to .it by suitable bolts D2 a table D3, on which is laid the leather or material to be skived, said f table having on its surface suitable adjust able edge guides ct a', the face of the righthand gage shown inhig. G vbeing beveled inwardly toward the face of the gage a, so as or knife having its front end beveled wholly at one side, as in Fig; 4, or on both sides, ias
shown Vin Fig. 5, according to the work to be` done.
The shank `of the blade or knife is slotted, as shown' inFig. 2, to receive screws b', said screws'connecting said blade adjustably to a holder 52 having one side rounded and set in a seat 193,-aset-sc1ew b4, connected to said holder and extended through a slot inthe seat, enabling the said holder to be turned in a circular path to thereby change the inclination of the front cutting edge of the blade or knife with relation to the Vsurface of the table to chan ge the bevel of the scarf or skived edge to be made by the blade or knife.
The machine has a counting mechanism to indicate the number of skiving cuts made on the machine, said counting mechanism having usual gearing', which will move the marked disks to indicate the number, the gearing being contained in a box d, said box having attached to its rear side a pawl-carrier having a suitable pawl CW, which engages one of the ratchet-Wheels of the train of gearing in the box, said pawl having connected to it a link cl2, the opposite end of said link being jointed Vto an arxn d3, fast on a rock-shaft d4, having fast on its lower end a cam-shaped IOO arm d5, which is struck by each lift or piece of leather which is y"fed between the rolls, thc action of the 4leather on the lever moving it to actuate the pawl carrier d', a suitable spiral spring d6,conn ected to said pawl-carrier and to a fixed stud d?, acting normally to hold the saidarin d5 in the path of movement of the leather being skived.
The seat b3 for the holder is shown as a lip projecting laterally from the upper end of a plate e, slotted for the reception of a clamping-screw c4, by which to hold the plate Yin position, said plate, when the screw is loosened, being made adjustable by adjustingscrews e., held in a rib e2 of the frame., a screw e3 acting as a stop-screw to relieve strain on the screw el.
The heel-lifts to be skived at their breast ends are usually employed -in spring-heeled shoes, and they are composed of one-or more layers of leather suitably pasted together. One `of these heel-lifts is yshown in Fig. 7.
When a heel-blank-of Vsuitable size for-one heel is to be beveled, the blade'shown in Fig. 4, it having one bevel, Will be used; but if the blank is long enough for two lifts -then it will be out centrally between its lends and the blade will have two bevels, as shown in One of the Vfeed-rolls is provided with a deep annular V-shaped groove of such depth as to enable the sharp front inclined edge of the blade to enter and act on the leather to be out close to the line in which the leather is nipped by the feed-rolls.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The `combination with feeding mechanism of a skiving-machine, of a blade or knife, a holder therefor, a scat to receive said holder, a .plate to which said seat is secured, ka horizontal rib on the frame of the machine, and independent adjusting means at opposite ends of said rib engaging said plate, substantially as described.
:In rtestimony 'whereof I have signed my nain-e 'to this specication in 'the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
