Description
, VMiren STATES CHANNELlNG-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,237, dated April 5, 1864.
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CUR'rIs STODDARD, of North Brookfield, in the county of VVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have in vented a new and useful Channeling-Machine 5 and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, is a description of my invention sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
This invention consists in the manner of hanging the upper or surface roll of a channeling-machine, so that pressure upon the sole can be varied, as circumstances may require; also, in so applying the channelingknives to the lever which carries the top roll that the position of said roll with respect to the knives shall regulate the depth to which the channel is cut '1n the sole 5 also, in the peculiar construction of the feed-wheel.
My improvements are embodied in the machine shown in the accompanying drawings, Figure l representing an end elevation of the machine; and Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal ection of the same, taken on the line m of A denotes the frame-work of the machine;
B, a horizontal shaft, rotating in bearings in said frame-work. Upon the iront end of this shaft is placed the feed-wheel C, and motion is given to the shaft B to rotate the feed-wheel by a crank, D, and connecting-gears E F, or in any other convenient manner.
In rear of thc feed-wheel C is a horizontal edge-roll, G, which turns loosely on a xed shaft, H, projecting from the frame. Over the top of the feed-wheel I place a vertical top or pressure roll, I, which also turns loosely7 on a shaft projecting from the frame A.
Between the front edge or surface of the cdgeroll Gr and the lower and inner edge of the top roll I the cutter L is'hung, as seen in the drawings, set-screws or other suitable contrivances being used to confine and adjust the cutter in position. The cutter is shown asso made and applied as to cut an angular incision into the surface of the sole and around and equidistant from the edge thereof, and at the bottom of this incision a tubular channel for the reception of the stitches.
The construction of the cutter forming no part of my invention, it will be unnecessary more particularly to describe it.
The feed-wheel O is constructed with teeth a a projecting from that part of its edge surface that rotates immediately beneath the top roll, I, and with a plain or smooth surface, b, between said teeth and the edge-roll G, as seen in Fig. 2.
In using the machine the sole is presented between the wheels G and I, with its edge impinging against the edge-roll G, the roll G being placed in such position in rear of the knives that the channel shall be eut at the proper distance from the edge of the sole, and the channel being kept parallel to or equidistant therefrom by holding the edge up to or against the roll as it progresses or is fed by the action of the feed-Wheel C. The wheel C is constructed with a plain surface, b, 'adjacent to its inner edge, and between the feed-teeth and such edge, for the purpose of protecting the eXtreme edge of the sole from contact with and indentations by the said teeth. Such indentations, if on or very nea-r to the edge of the sole, are exposed and mar the said edge when the sole is trimmed or finished up, making a rough or jagged appearance, whereas by setting the teeth back the edge is left smooth. The top or presser roll, I, is journaled in the front end of a lever, K, which turns on a fulcrum, L, as seen in Fig. 2, and a connecting-rod, M, extends from near the front end of the lever to a treadle, so that pressure of the top roll, I, upon the sole, to keep it against the teeth of the feed-wheel and to cause it to be fed against and so as to be operated upon by the channeling-tools, is produced by pressure of the foot upon the treadle,such pressure, as will be readily understood, being varied according to the nature of the stock, or being so applied as to keep the teeth a froml slipping on the lower surface of the sole.
Other means may be used for hanging the pressure-roll, it only being necessary to my invention that it shall be so hung as to be capable of variable pressure "at will against the head N, in which the pressure-roll I is the surface of the sole While the machine is '2.
