Nr'rn TATES NAZARETH PAQUETTE, OF PETERSBURG, MICHIGAN.
FRACTURE APPYARATUIIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,625, dated September 28, 1897.
Application filed January 26, 1897. erial No. 620,761. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAZARETH PAQUETTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Petersburg, in the county of Monroe and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Devioes for Set ting Broken Limbs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled-in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a novel construction of a device for setting fractured and dislocated limbs, and has for its object to provide a device of this character by means of which it is possible to set a fractured or dislocated limb without assistance. a
The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the manner in which this instrument is applied for setting a leg. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the instrument removed. In this figure certain parts are broken away for convenience of illustration. Fig-dis a front elevation showing the manner in which the device is applied for setting an arm. Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the end of the strap. Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the socket on the bottom of the padded 'Fig. 7 is. a horizontal longitudinal section of the side rods.
In accordance with the principle involved by this invention I employ a device consistin g of two rods 1, that are connected together at their lower ends by a cross-piece 2. Near theconnected ends of the rods is a windingdrum 3, while connected with the other end of one of the rods is a padded cross-piece 4. In using the device a strap 5, having a plurality of pads 6, is employed for attaching the outer end of the limb to the windingdrum, and in the drawings I have shown these straps or bands and the pads arranged for connection with the foot or hand whereby the instrument can be employed for setting the leg or arm. I also employ a strap 7, carrying pads 8, for the purpose of holding the leg or arm in the correct position between the rods. In employing this device the crosspiece at is placed against the groin or in the armpit and then 'the leg or the hand is fastened by the strap 5 to the winding-drum, and it is seen, therefore, that by winding in the strap upon the winding-drum the limb is pulled to the correct position, while at the same time the cross-piece pushes upon the body, and in this manner the limb can be straps 5, while the shaft of the winding-drum passes through the rods and is provided at one end with the ratchet-wheel 11, that is engaged by a spring-actuated ratchet 12. In this way it is seen that by means of the handle 13 the winding-drum can be turned to tighten the strap 5 to any degree, while the ratchet 12 can be moved to hold the ratchetwheel or allow the same to rotate for the purpose of unwinding the strap. The cross-piece at is removably connected with the end of the rods by means of the bolt 14 passing through a socket 15 on the cross-piece and through an opening in the end of the rod As a further and separate improvement the rods are joined at about their centers for the purpose of shortening the device when it is desired to transport the same. This construction consists of a pivot 16 between the sections of the rod and the removable bolt 17, which passes through openings in the end sections of the rod when said sections stand in alinement. The said rods are also adjustable longitudinally, whereby they are adapted for use in connection with long or short limbs, and for this purpose each of the rods is constructed in sections 18, while one of the sections carries the pins 19 to enter openings 20 in the other sections, and in this way it is seen the length of the rods can be easily adjusted, while a shaft 21, carried by the sections carrying the pins 19,passes through one of the openings 20 and by means of a nut holds said parts together.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that with a device ofthis kind a person can set a fractured or dislocated limb with out assistance, and, furthermore, the limb can be drawn to the desired length and easily held. Furthermore, the device is reversible, so that the same instrument can be used for a right or left limb, and also a device constructed in accordance with this invention can be used for setting the arm or the leg.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- y In a device of the class described, the combination of two parallel rods each consisting of a series of detachable and longitudinallya-djnstable sections, a cross-bar connecting the opposite sections of the rods at one end, a strap connecting the adjoining sections of the rods at the opposite ends, a pad consisting of a socket-piece detachably connected with the terminal sections of one of said rods, and a removable curved plate secured thereto and provided with padding, 'a winding-drum adjoining the connecting cross-bar and provided with a pin or projection, an attachingstrap for engagement with the limb provided with openings adapted to be engaged by said pin, and a series of straps provided with pads NAZARETH PAQU E E.
