PATENT OFFICE,
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOSITION OF SLATE-PENGILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5,903, dated November 7, 1848.
cient quantity of water to mix them well tol gether into a thick paste or dough, when the whole mass is thoroughly kneaded until it becomes of the consistence required for molding When in this state the mass or clay is put into a cylinder, the bottom of which is perforated with holes of the various sizes I desire to make the pencils, and by means of a piston working in the cylinder and a powerpress the clay or mass is forced through the holes in the bottom of the cylinder into long strings or pencils. In this state they are cut into convenientlengths and dried, after which they are put into an oven or furnace suitable.
to the purpose and subjected to a good red heat, at which point the process of baking may be stopped and the pencils allowed to cool, when they are fit for use.
Having now described the material and processof making my white slate-pencils, I will proceed to state what I claim and desire to secnrc by Letters Patent. What I claim therefore is- The mixing or combining in certain proportions,as above'described, the materials of alu-
