Description
UNITED STATES-PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVUS IV. INGALLS, OF CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT iN REED-PLATES FOR IVIELODEONS5 86C.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,027, dated October 23, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvUs W. INGALLs, of Concord, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Reed Socket-Plates for Melodeons or other musical instruments of like character; and I do hereby declare the saine to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompa- 1| ying drawings, ot" which- Figure l is a top view, Fig. 2 a transverse section, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of a reed socket-plate made in accordance with my invention, the drawings being made on a scale very much greater than that of an ordinary socket-plate.
In the common method of punching' ont the openings of reed-plates a burr or rough edge is left, which produces during vibration of the reed more or less harshness of tone. 'lhe object of my invention is to avoid this, and in carrying it out I punch the plate by means of a punch or die, s0 as to form the openin g, and I subsequently form in that side of the plate which is opposite to that at which the punch tirst entered it a mouth to the opening.
In the drawings, A is the plate, a the reedopening, and b its Inouth. In this way the edges c c and ends of the reed-opening a become rounded. the same being in consequence ot' the condensation of the metal before the part to be removed from it may be broken from the rest of the plate by the punch. vThis saves all dressing ofthe edges or facing of the plate in order to separate any burr from them, and causes thc sound ofthe reed to be smooth and even. It also saves much labor in voicing7 the reed.
The mouth may be formed or made by a rotary cutter to cut into the plate on that side of it from which the blank or piece of metal leaves it when forced ont of it by the punch.
I claimrIhe improved -reed socket-plate made substantially as described-viz., by punching it through in one direction and forming the mouth on that side which is opposite to that surface at which the punch is made to enter the metal.
GUSTAVUS W. INGALLS.
