" J. B. JOHNSTON.
FENCE POST.
N0. 589,898. Patented Sept. 1-4, 1897.
. WITNESSES 11v ENTOR ,1: JZPneSEQJJZMSZZW A ttarne NITE JAMES BOIVER JOHNSTON, OF PUEBLO, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-IIALF TO II. IV. GIBBONS AND CHARLES H. SOHELL, OF SAME PLACE.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 589,898, dated September 14, 1897. Application filed January 12, 1897. Serial No. 618,920. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES BOWER JOHNS- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
In a companion application filed January 12, 1897, Serial No. 618,919,I have described an improved form of fence-post which is V I 5 shaped in cross-section and is provided with oppositely-disposed angularly-arranged slits in the outer edges of the sides thereof, through which the line-wires are adapted to be passed,
and a woven-wire clamping device for preventing the lateral displacement of the linewires. The said fastening device has proved very effective, but in order that a more permanent means of securing the line-wires in place may be provided I have devised another form of fence-post, which forms the subjectmatter of the present application.
This invention therefore consists of a fence post constructed of any suitable form and dimensions and of concrete or other analo- 0 gous material, the side edges thereof being provided with slits through which the line Wires of the fence pass, the said line-wires being securely held in place by means of cement, concrete, or other like material applied 3 5 to said slits and closing them after the line wires are in place.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a fence, showing my improved fence-post and the line-wires connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View ofone of the posts before the line-wires are applied.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts 5 in both views.
As above stated, the fence-post 1 may be of any suitable form and dimensions. The same is preferably constructed of concrete,fire-clay, or other analogous material, and has cut in the side edges thereof angularly-arranged 5o slits 2 2, through which the line-Wires 3 are adapted to be passed. WVhen said line-wires have been stretched to the proper degree of tension, they are passed through the slits, and are afterward secured in place by means of cement or concrete, which is placed around said wires on the inside of said slits, closing the latter and making a homogeneous post.
While I have referred herein to the linewires 3 as passing through the slits 2 2 in said fence-post, it is obvious that I may employ, instead of said 1ine-wires, bands, chains, gaspipe, or any other suitable fencing material, the method and application being the same whatever material may be used.
Having now described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fence-post having slits in the side. edges thereof throughwhich the line-wires are adapted to be passed, the said line-wires being held in place by the application of cementor concrete to said slits, substantially as described.
2. A fence-post having angularly-arranged 7 5 slits in the outer edge thereof in which the line-wires of the fence are adapted to be in serted, the said line-wires being sealed in place and prevented from slipping by means of cement or concrete applied in a plastic condition to said slits, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES BOWER JOHNSTON.
