G. W. PATTERSON. FASTENING DEVICE FOR SHOE LACES.
No. 589,571. Patented Sept. 7,1897.

UNITED STATES EA'rnNr Fries,
FASTENING DEVICE FOR SHOE-LACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,571, dated September 7, 1897.
Application filed April 6, 1897- Serial No. 630,921. (No model.)
v .To rt-ZZ- whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WELLINGTON PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented con tain. new and useful Improvements in Fastenin g Devices for Shoe-Laces, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to shoe-fastening devices, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device for this purpose by means of which the ends of the shoe-lace may be quickly and easily secured without tying the same.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the upper part of the shoe provided with my improved fastening devices, two of which are shown; and Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings l have shown at 5 and G the opposite sides of the upper part of the ankle of the shoe, and at 7 an ordinary shoe-lace is shown, the ends of which are shown at 8, and in the practice of my invention I provide a fastening device which consists of a small plate 9, which is provided at its rear end and sides with teeth or projections 10, which are adapted to be inserted through the ankle of the shoe, and at the front thereof is formed a hook 11, the end of which is passed back wardly beneath the plate 9, as shownin Figs. 1 and 2. I also provide an oblong plate 12, in which is formed a triangular slot or opening 13, the larger end of which is directed backwardly, and this plate is connected with the hook 11, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and mounted on said plate is a link 14, which is free to slide thereon, and the forward end of the plate 12 is provided at its opposite sides with lugs or projections 15, which prevent the link 14 from being disconnected therefrom.
In Fig. 1 two of these fastening devices are shown, one being connected with each side or part of the shoe, and in, practice the end of the lace is passed beneath the free end of the plate 12,around the link 14., and down through the smaller end of the slot or opening 13, as
clearly shown in the drawings, and by pulling on the end of the lace it would bedrawn tightly through said slot or opening, and the said link 14 will move forward and securely wedge or hold the edge of said lace in said slot or opening.
This device is simple in construction and operation, and may be used as a glove-fastener, corset-fastener, and for many and other similar purposes.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A shoelace-fastening device consisting of a plate which is provided with teeth or projections on one side thereof, and also with a hook or loop and an oblong plate which is connected with said hook or loop, said oblong plate being provided with a slot or opening through which the hookor loop is passed and said plate being provided with a link which is free to move thereon ,substantially as shown and described.
2. A shoelace-fastening device consisting of a plate which is provided with teeth or projections on one side thereof, and also with a hook or loop and an oblong plate which is connected with said hook or loop, said oblong plate being provided with a slot or opening through which the hook or loop is passed and said plate being provided with a link which is free to move thereon, and said plate being also provided at its free end with outwardlydirected lugs or projections by means of which the linkis held thereon, substantially as shown and described.
3. A shoelace-fastening device consisting of a plate which is adapted to be secured to the shoe and provided with a hook or loop,
and an oblong plate which is connected with said hook or loop, said oblong plate being provided with a slot or opening through which the hook or loop is passed and said plate being provided with a link which is free to move thereon, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that l cltlllltllfi foregoing as my invention I have signed myname, in presence of the subscribin witnesses, this 5th day of April, 1897.
GEORGE WELLINGTON PATTERSON.
