UNITED STATES PATENT SOLOMON C. HIRSCHBER-G, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
COMBINA'TLION NOSE-GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,549, dated September 7, 1897.
Application tiled January 19, 1897. Serial No. 619,768. (No model.)
T0 tu whoml trudy concern..-
Beit known that l, SOLOMON C. HIRSCH- BERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of .New York, in the county of NewY York and Stat-e of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombination Nose-Gages, of which the following is a specification. f
My invention relates to improvements in nose-gages employed by optical companies to determine the exact shape of a nose for the purpose of selecting a spectacle Whose bridge is so shaped as to fit exactly such a nose, and my invention consists in a plate having a multiplicity of notches in its edge, corresponding with the various shapes of the nose, and to print or engrave onto the adjoining surface the directions for the selection of the corresponding bridge of a spectacle.
In the accompanying drawings, 'Figure l. is a face view of an octagonal plate provided with notches cut out along its edges. Figs. 2 and 3 are face Views of differently-shaped strips provided with notches along one of their edges.
In the selection of spectacles the facial measurements of the frame are just as essential as the proper adjustment of the lenses. For this purpose a contrivance hereinafter described and shown 'is highly beneficial and will save to a salesman and customer considerable time, as it combines, preferably, a large number of notches of different forms, correspending with a variety of external shapes of the bridge of the nose, arranged around the outer edge of a disk or plate, the shape of which may be varied to sui t requirements, and upon the face of which, opposite or near each single notch, is printed or engraved or otherwise mounted a description of that particular notch, giving, preferably, besides the number, the height and the Width of the notch in the two most conventional measures, in millimeters and in inches.
The gage is made of any suitable material, preferably of pasteboard, sheet metal, and
vthe like.
In the drawings, Fig. l shows the notch arranged upon the edge of an octagonal disk or plate and the description arranged radially upon one face. In Figs. 2 and 3 they are arranged on straight and curved strips, but the shape of the disk or plate is not essential, and the description may be attached to one or both faces ofv a disk or strip.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A nose-gage consisting of a plate having a multiplicity of notches in its edge, the notches being of diierent forms to correspond With a variety of external sha-pes of the bridge of the nose, the plate being provided with iigures or characters indicating the measurements of the notch, all substantially as described.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 18th day of January, A. D. 1897. A
SOLOMON C. HIRSCHBERG.
