Description

(No Model.)
J. H. GIBSON. PORTABLE QUILTING FRAME.
No. 589,526. Patented Sept. 7,1897.
UNITED STATES FFICE PATENT PORTABLE QUlLTlNG-FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,526, dated September '7, 1897.
Application filed March 22, 1897. Serial llo. 628,735. (No model.)
To all whom, (It may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of McNaii-y and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Quilting-Frames; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in portable quilting-frames; and the object is to simplify the construction of the same and provide a cheap, durable, and eifective device of this class; and to these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved quilting-frame as it appears in operation. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of one of the ratchet-wheels and pawl. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the manner of detachably securing the quilt material. to the beam.
' 1 1 represent the diagonally-crossed legs pivoted on the bolts 2 2, fixed to the longitudinal center brace 3.
4- represents the rectangular quilt-beam journaled in the upper ends of the opposite parallel legs 1, and the outer ends of this beam are provided with ratchet-wheels 5 5,
and represents a spring-pawl which projects through a slot in a guide-stud 6' and having its rear en d pivoted to a lever 7, mounted on a screw 8, and by swinging this lever around, as shown in dotted lines, the free end of said pawl may be'projected into or withdrawn from the path of the teeth on the ratchet-wheel at will. The stud 6 is fixed in the leg and the spring-pawl 6 fits in the slot with suflicient friction to hold it against the action of the ratchet-wheel, the frictional contact of the pawl in the slotted stud being sufficient to retain the ratchet, it requiring the use of the lever 7 to withdraw the end of the spring-pawl from the path of the ratchetwheel when necessary to rotate the beam in the opposite direction to unwind the material.
9 represents the opposite parallel quiltbeam journaled in the upper ends of the parallel legs 1', and its opposite ends are provided with ratchet-wheels 10 10, and the pawls 5 5 are provided as for the opposite beam 4.
12 12 represent levers pivoted at one end to the legs 1, and their free ends engage the notches 13 13 in the contiguous face of the v opposite legs 1.
14 represents a longitudinal angular groove formed in one of the plane faces of the beam 9, which receives the angular toe 15 of a rectangular spring-clamp 16, which encompasses two sides of the beam and clamps the edge of the quilt to it to hold it in place while the quilt is being wrapped on the beam.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall Within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A portable quilting-frame comprising the diagonally-crossed legs 1 1, fulcrumed on the opposite ends of the longitudinal brace 3, and provided with the toothed notches 13, and pivot-ed levers 12 12, in combination with the beam 4, journaled in the upper ends of the legs 1, and the parallel beam 9 journaled in the upper ends of the legs 1, both beams being provided with ratchet-wheels and having the spring-pawls 6 6, extending through a guide-slot in the studs 6 6 and having their outer ends pivoted to the lever 7, mounted on
