Description

UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
I MINER S. KEELER, OF MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN.
BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 588,442, dated August 17, 1897. Application filed April 26, 1897. Serial No, 633,968- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MINER S. KEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the village of Middleville, in the county of. Barry and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tocertain new and useful improvements for attaching the side rail of a bed to the bed-post, andis peculiarly adapted to the attachment of the side rail to the posts of metal beds, which beds have the posts filled with wood, and the posts are secured to the side rails by my novel invention and also may be secured to the end pieces of the bed. v
The objects of my invention are, first,\to furnish a secure and durable method of attaching the side rail, and, if desired, the end pieces to the corner-posts of metallic beds; second, to cheapen the construction of metallic beds and to give to them greater rigidity and firmness. These objects I accomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a sectional View of a cornerpost through the point of attachment, illustratin g the right-angle slots and also the ring attachment Within the outer or metallic shell. Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal sectional View on line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the attaching-ring detached; and Fig. 4 shows a side elevationof a portion of one of the posts and a portion of the side rail, the dotted lines showing the position of the bed-iron in the slot engaging with the attaching-ring.
Similar letters refer to similar parts th roughout the several views.
A represents the outer or metallic shell of the bed-post.
B represents the wooden filling.
C shows the connectin g-ring, which is made, preferably, of spring metal, surrounding the wooden portion of the post and havingits outer edge lying flush therewith. In the illustration I have shownthis ring round in crosssection, but it may be made rectangular or in any other form. The wood portion of the post B is provided with a groove of sufficient depth to receive the ring O.
II shows the open space in the ring, which allows for attaching the same to the wooden portion of the post. v
- F shows .the slot in the post, which receives the bed-iron E of the side rail G, and F shows the slot at right'angles to slot F, which is adapted to receive an iron on the end rails of the bed. The slots F and Fare out through the metal casing A and also into the Wooden filling, the general position of the slots being shown in Fig. 1 and the shape of the slot being shown more fully in Fig. 2.
The bed-iron E is secured to the bed-rail G by means of bolts or any other suitable means.
The ring 0 is made of spring metal, so that it can be opened to allow it to be attached to the wooden filling B before the wooden filling B is placed in position within the shell A.
Instead of using the slots and pins for attaching the end rails of the bed to the posts, they may be attached by other means and the ring attachment used solely and only for the attachment of the side rails G to the bedposts. However, I prefer to use the two slots and the two irons for each post, as above described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the post of a bed having a circumferential groove and a longitudinal slot intersecting said groove, of aring seated in said groove, and a side rail provided with a bed-iron constructed to enter said slot and engage said ring to secure the side rail to the post, substantially as-described.
2. In combination with the outer case as A, an inner filling of wood as B, provided with a slot as F, a ring as 0 adapted to surround the wooden filling, and a side rail G provided with a bed-iron E adapted to engage with said ring and secure the said side rail to the post, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
MINER S. KEELER. [L. s.] Witnesses:
