Be it known that I, ALVOID O. MANNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and use-.

. ful Improvement in Scaifolding-Jacks for Use in Connection with Ladders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a scaffold-supporting attachment or jack for use in connection with ladders; and the especial object of my invention is to provide a strong, simple, and readily-adjustable construction which is especially adapted for the use of housepainters.

To these ends my invention consists of the parts and combinations of parts, as hereinafter described,and more particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View illustrating the mannerin'which my scaffoldingjack can be used in connection Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views illustrating the means which I preferably employ for locking the construction into engagement with one of the rounds of a ladder. Fig. 4: is a detail View illustrating the means which I preferably employ for adj ustably connecting the two arms of my scaffolding-jack, and Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating a foot-piece or fork for engaging a ladderround.

In painting the exterior of houses it is now ordinarily customary to employ what are known as swing-stages, which are supported from above and can be raised and lowered by means of suitable tackle. The use of swing-stages requires the employment of quite a number of blocks and ropes, which involve considerable labor in rigging and operating the same.

The especial object of my invention is therefore to provide a construction which may be employed in connection with a pair of ordinary ladders to support a scaffolding, and my construction is especially designed for paintin g the exterior of moderate-sized houses without the use of swing-stages ordinarily employed.

according to my invention comprises arms adj ustably connected together and provided with sockets for engaging the ladder-rounds.

As shown in Fig. 1, my scaffolding-jack may be secured upon an inclined ladder, so that the scaffolding can be mounted or supported .on either side thereof.

As illustrated, my jack comprises two arms A and B, adjustably connected together at their ends,so that the jack may be adapted for use in ladders placed at different inclinations to support a scaffold horizontally. At its innerend the arm A is provided with hooks 10 and 11 for engaging a ladder-round. A locking extension or projection 12 is connected to the inner end of the piece A by means of a hinge 13.

When the arm A is to be placed in position, the locking-piece 12 is turned, as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that the hookpieces 10 and 11 may engage one of the rounds The locking-piece 12 is then turned down, as illustrated by the full lines in Fig. 2, so that the round of the ladder will be locked into engagementwith the hooks 10 and 11 and the hooks cannot become displaced therefrom.

The means which I employ for adjustably connecting the arms A and B are most clearly illustrated in Fig. l. As illustrated in this 'figure, the arm A is provided at its outer end with a notched piece or rack 14, which is bolted thereto bymeans of the bolts 15. The arm B is provided at its upper end with brackets 17, carrying a cross pin or bolt 18 for engaging the notched piece or rack 14. A crosspiece or retaining-strap 16 is carried by the notched piece 14 to hold the arms A and B together while the device is not in use. its lower end the arm B is, provided with a foot-piece or fork 19 to engage a lower round of the ladder.

I By employing two inclined ladders and two scaffolding supports or jacks of this construction I am enabled to support a scaffold at different elevations and am enabled to paint or finish the exterior of a house of moderate height much more readily than is now done by the use of ordinary swingstages.

I am aware that changes may be made in the construction of my scaffolding-jack for use in connection with ladders by those who are skilled in the art without departing from the scope of my invention as expressed in the claims. I do not wish, therefore, to be limited to the form which I have shown and described; but

lVhat I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In a device of the class described, the combination of the connected arms A and B, the hook-pieces 10 and 11 extending from the arm A, and a single locking-section 12 arranged between the hooks l0 and 11, and pivotally connected to the arm A to lock said hooks into engagement with the round of a ladder, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a horizontal arm A, a downwardly-extending, inclined arm or prop B, and means for ad justably connecting said arms, comprising a notched piece or rack let, a retaining piece or strip 16 arranged below said rack, pieces 17 extending up from the arm B on opposite sides of the retaining-piece 1G, and a cross pin or bolt 18 carried by said pieces for engaging the notched rack 11-, sub stantially as described.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a horizontal arm A, hooks 1() and 11 extending from opposite sides of said arm, a single locking-piece 12 arranged between said hooks and pivotally connected to the arm A to lock said hooks into engagement with a ladder-round, an inclined, downwardly-extending arm or prop B, and means for adjustably connecting the arms A and B, comprising the notched rack 1-1:, the retaining-strip 16 carried by the arm A, pieces 17 extending up from the arm B on opposite sides of the retaining-strip 16, and a cross-pin 18 secured in said pieces, substantially as described.
