UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. YOUNG, or RANTOUL, KANSAS.
EGG-TRAY FOR INCUBATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,044, dated August 10, 1897.
Application filed May 27, 1896. Serial No. 593,313. (No model.)
T ail whom it nut l (JO/Z6877."
Be it known that I, JOHN H. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rantoul, in the county of Franklin and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Trays for Incubators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to 1 0 which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to trays for holdin g the eggs in incubators, and more particularly to that class in which all of the eggs in the tray can be turned over half-Way, as is done by the mother hen, without removing them from the incubator or even handling them; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple, safe, and convenient device of this class, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the same figures of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of an incubator with my improved tray in place. Fig. 2 is a view of the tray removed from the incubator. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the tray, showing the eggs in place.
0 Fig. 4 is a view of one of the sides of the tray.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the roller-frame removed from the tray, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross-section of the same.
The egg-tray 2 consists of two end pieces 5 3 at and two side pieces 5 6, secured together in the form of a rectangle. The side pieces 5 and 6 are provided with longitudinal rectangular grooves 7, located near their lower edges, and in these grooves 7 the sides 8 8 of 0 the rectangular roller-frame S S 9 9 freely slide, the length of the outside of the rollerframe being shorter than the inside length of the egg-tray to allow the frame to have an end'movement within the tray of two or three The front end 9' of said frame is provided with two rods 10 10, secured thereto,
and their outer ends have each a removable knob or handle 12, which extends outside of the wall 13 of the incubator, the rods 10 10 passing through orifices 14 in said Walls.
A series of rollers 15 are journaled in the sides 8 8 of the rectangular frame and over them is a piece of cloth 16, the ends 17 of which are provided with cords 18 and are secured in place by cleats 19 19, secured to the ends 3 4 of the tray proper, there being sufficient material to allow the cloth to sag down by the weight of the eggs between the rollers.
The eggs being placed in the tray on the cloth resting on the rollers, the tray is then inserted in the incubator, with the rods 10 1O projecting through the orifices in the walls. The knobs 12 12 are then secured in place and the door closed. Whenever it is necessary to turn the eggs without opening the door and letting cold air in, the knobs are pushed in, which slides the frame containing the eggs in the tray. This motion causes the rollers to turn the eggs one-half way around the same, as a hen does, and as they have to be turned every twelve hours the next time it is necessary to turn them the knobs are simply pulled out, restoring them to their former position, and so on until the hatch is finished.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do notdesire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention Without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with an egg-tray, of a roller-frame forming the bottom of said tray and having a sliding engagement therewith, and a flexible belt or fabric secured to said tray and supported upon said rollers with portions thereof sagging between said rollers to form egg-pockets, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with an egg-tray having grooves in the inner faces of its sides, of a roller-frame forming the bottom of said tray and having its sides seated in said grooves, the length of the outside of the roller-frame being less than the length of the inside of the the ends of the belt or fabric to the cleats,
tray, means for moving the ro11er-fra1ne, a substantially as set forth. no flexible belt or fabric supported on the rollers In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my of the roller-frame and being of a greater signature in presence of two witnesses.
5 length than the roller-frame so that portions of said belt or fabric will sag between said Vitnesses: rollers and form egg-pockets, cleats secured J. M. SPRINGER, to the ends of the tray, and cords connecting I. F. GORTHY.
JOHN H. YOUNG.
