J. BOSSARD.
ELECTRODEPOSITING DEVICE. 7 N0. 587,782. Patented Aug. 10,1897.
ATTOH/V Y nu: nomus mus so. mvauraa. WASNINGTOH, p. c.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BOSSARD, OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
ELECTRODEPOSITING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,782, dated August 10, 1897.
Application filed June 1, 1896. Serial No. 593,839. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN BOSSARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inElectrodepositing Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to electrodepositing devices of that class in which the articles to be deposited upon receive their deposit while traveling or being drawn through the bath; and the special object is to provide a convenient means for advancingthe articles along in the bath and to sustain them while they are making such advance.
The following specification will show in detail the manner in which I accomplish the same, and in giving its description I call attention to the drawings which form a part of the specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one of the modes of advancing the articles in the bath. Fig. 2 is a similar view of another mode, and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of a portion of Fig. 1.
Like figures of reference denote corresponding parts in all of the drawings.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the tank in which is contained the usual depositing bath. Above the bath is rigidly secured a metallic bar or shaft 2, resting in the journals 3 3 but not re-- volving therein. Around said shaft 2 is coiled a wire 6, the ends of which are fastened into sleeves 5 5, adapted to revolve in the journals 3 and around the shaft 2. To the outer end of one of the sleeves 5 is fixed a drive-wheel a, to which power is applied for revolving the coil 6. Into the space between the coils upon the shaft 2 are hung hooks 7 7, from which the articles to be deposited upon are suspended within the bath.
In Fig. 2 the same general construction is shown as in Fig. 1, with the exception that instead of surrounding the shaft 2 by the coil 6 threads 8 are cut into the shaft 2, which are integral with the shaft. The hooks 7 are hung between the threads 8 the same as between the coils 6 in Fig. 1. Beneath the shaft 2 and above the tank is run acathode-rod 18, against which the metallic hooks '7 bear and from which they receive the cathode-current. These cathode-rods may be dispensed with and the cathode element applied directly to the metallic shaft 2.
The manner of operating my device is as follows: Power is applied to the drive-wheel 4, which revolves the spiral coil in Fig.1 and the shaft 2 in Fig. 2. The articles to be deposited upon are attached to the hooks 7 and suspended upon the shaft 2 between the coils 6 or in the threads 8. The hooks also bear against the cathode-bars 18, when such cathode-bars'are used. As the wheel4 continues to revolve the articles will be carried along in the bath by the threads or coil on the shaft.
Having now described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an electrodepositing device, the tank, and a supporting device mounted above it, combined with suspension hooks or devices hung upon or supported by the supporting devices, and means secured to the supporting device for advancing the articles through the bath, and suitable anode and cathode connections.
2-. In an electrodepositing device, means for advancing the articles to be deposited upon in the bath, consisting of ashaft, acoil around said shaft, hooks to which the articles to be deposited upon are attached, said hooks engagingwith said shaft between the meshes of the coil and means for revolving said shaft, whereby the articles are advanced through the bath while suspended from said bar, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BossARD.
