Description

D. O. GUTTRIDGE,
OF CANTON, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM GLUFF, OF STARK COUNTY, OHIO.
IMPROVED CAR-COUPLING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,723, dated October 9, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. O. GUTTRIDGE, of Canton, Stark county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Gonplings, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents aplan view of the coupler with the end of the car to which it is attached. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same. 1
In the annexed drawings, A represents an end view of the floor of the car. B is the coupler, which is made of metal, having a throat at the end to place the link. This coupler is attached'to the cars in the usual way, and has an oblong slot, 00, at the top and a corresponding slot at the bottom to place the couplingpinp.
Near the center of the coupler are two studs, 2, to prevent the pin at from entering too far.
f is a metallic keeper, which connects the coupler B to the bottom of the car and allows said coupler to readily slide back or forward within it.
In the rear of coupler B is a metallic L- shaped plate, It, attached to the car, and connected to the coupler by a spindle, K, while bet-ween the plate R and couplerB, upon said spindle, is an indiarubber spring, M, for the purpose of forcing the coupler forward after being pressed to the rear in coupling the cars.
0 represents a metallic rod, which lies horizontally on the fioor of the car, near its end, and is connected by a prong, F, to the coupling-pin p. This red O extends from one side of the car to the other, and is bent at each end, as shown, so that the coupling may be made without going between the cars by means of said ends of the rod.
g] 3 g are small keepers, which connect the rod G to the car and allow the ends to be pressed down for the purpose of throwing the pin upward and uncoupling the cars. g isa rod, which is pivoted to the prong F of rod 0, and extends to the top of the car, for uncoupling or coupling from the top of the cars.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The rod (3, provided with the prong F and connected to the coupling-pin p, when used in combination with the movable coupler B and rod g, as herein set forth.
As evidence that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
D. O. GUTTRIDGE. Witnesses:
W. W. CLARK, J. J. CLARK.
