HOE. No. 587,088. Patented July 27, 1897.
W/TNESSES. INVENTO/T UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. OHAMBLIN, OF ROUND HILL, VIRGINIA.
HOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 0. 587,088, dated July 27, 1897. Application filed February 11, 1397- Serial No. 622,924. (No model.)
The hoe is produced by cutting or stamping from sheet metal, such as sheet-iron or boileriron, of the required thickness for stiffness, together with integral wing parts a, a at the vertical edge of the upper corners, which are long enough to be bent and secured to each side of the handle. The handle is also secured to the blade at its upper edge by nails driven through the end of the handle, and to reinforce this connection and to brace and give greater stiffness to the blade I provide a stay-piece b, crossing the blade and secured to it beneath the handle between the wing parts, whereby the blade is rendered stiff between the wings. This stay-piece is formed with an upset-tongue c, which projects be neath the handle, is secured to it, forms a knee-brace thereto, and gives an effective fastening for the end of the tongue to the blade. This knee-brace serves to resist the thrust of the blade upon the end of the handle, and
thereby gives a durable fastening for the end of the handle to the inner face of the blade and relieves the strain upon the wing-fastenings. The stay is riveted to the blade, and it may be of any suitable width and form. The wings connecting the vertical edges of the blade serve to stiffen it. The Wings also serve to form sides to the blade and thereby give it greater digging effectiveness and coact with the blade in holding the earth. The handle being fastened to the blade and to the wings in rear of the blade renders the fastening of the hoe to its handle much stronger.
I clairn 1. A hoe formed of asheet-iron blade with wings at its side edges at the upper corners and the handle having its end abutting and secured against the wall of .the blade and also bolted to and between the ends of the wings in rearv of the blade whereby the wings form braces for the handle and sides to the blade.
2. The combination with the hoe-blade of sheet-iron having wings at its upper vertical corner edges and the handle secured to the wings and to the inner face of the blade, of the stay-piece secured to the inner face of the blade beneath the handle and to the end of the tongue, forming a knee-brace thereto and reinforcing the blade.
