Description

(No Model.)
G. H. POND. BUOYANT PROPELLER.
Patented July 20, 1897.
.To aZZ whom it may concern:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GOL DSBURY HARDEN POND, OF ASHBURNHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUOYANT PROPELLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,915, dated July 20, 1897. Application filed May 25, 1896. Serial No. 593,094. (No model.)
Be it knownthat I, GoLDsBURY HARDEN POND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ashburnham, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buoyant Propellers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in buoyant propellers of that class or description for which I have made applications for Letters Patent of even date herewith, Serial Nos. 593,093 and 593,095.
The present invention relates more particularly to the means for propelling the endless rails; and it consists, essentially, in an endless cable moving or traveling around two pulleys, in combination with buoyant pontoons hinged together, forming an endless series, flanged wheels j ournaled on transverse shafts secured to the pontoons, spring-clamps secured'to ends of said pontoons with which said cables engage, and means for moving said cables, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is acentral longitudinal section of a buoyant propeller constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the pontoons.
In the said drawings, the reference-letter B designates the lower deck of the structure, secured to suitable transverse beams 0.
- The letter A designates an endless rail com prising the upper and lower horizontal portions and the semicircular connecting portions. There are two of these rails .at each side of the structure arranged in pairs, but only one of them is illustrated in the present case.
cable 25, by which motion is imparted to said pulleys and horizontal cables. Secured to each end of the pontoons is a spring-clamp 24, with which the cables 22engage.
The operation is as follows: The steam-engine being set in operation the horizontal cables 22 are set in motion, when the lower runs thereof will engage with the springclamps, which will grip the same. The endless rails will now be caused to travel on the wheels of the pontoons, the latter being successively depressed at the front and elevated at the rear, forming ways for said rails.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- In a buoyant propeller of the character described, the combination with the endless rails, the pontoons hinged to each other and the wheels connected therewith, and the spring-clamps at the ends of the pontoons, of the pulleys, the endless horizontal cables, the lower runs of which engage with and are gripped by said clamps and means for operating said cables, substantially as described.
GOLDSBURY HARDEN POND.
