Be it known that I, CHARLES C. SnrrH, of Exeter, in the county of Fillmore and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Indexes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved index designed for temporary use on the leaves of a book to indicate the character of the leaves, the index being arranged to permit of moving it from leaf to leaf as an account progresses, the index being also very serviceable in indexing shifting accounts of a general ledger and other account-books.

The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of the improvement, and Fig. -l is an enlarged sectional plan view of thc improvement as applied.

The improved index is provided with a clip A and a tab B, of which the former is made of a single piece of spring metal bent over so as to form the sides A and A3, arranged parallel one to the other and a suitable distance apart, as plainly indicated in Fig. 4. The free ends of the sides A and A2 are formed with inwardly-extending jaws A3 and A", respectively, normally. contacting with each other and adapted to engage and clamp the leaf C, a portion of which extends between the sides A and A3, as indicated in Fig. 4.

The tab B is preferably made of leather or like flexible material and is also bent over to form two sides, of which the front ends B' and B2 extend over the sides A and A2 of the clip, the said portions being fastened to the clip by a suitable adhesive substance or other means. Thus the parts B and B2 form a cover for the metallic clip. The remaining portions B3 and B1 of the tab extend outwardly from the bend of the clip A, and the space between these portions B3 and B4 con tains a lilling D of suitable material, the filling being secured in place by stitches E or other means.

On the portions B3 and l5" are printed, stamped, or otherwise marked the character or characters forming the title of the account or the like, so that when the index is applied on the leaves C, as shown in Figs. l and 4, the title can be conveniently read, it being understood that the tab forms a tag.

By the arrangement described the clip can be readily engaged with the leaves C of the book to securely hold the index in place at any desired point along the margin of the leaf, as indicated in Fig. l, and the index can be readily removed whenever desired and placed on another page of the book or onto a page of another book. Thus the index is very serviceable for indexing shifting accounts of a general ledger or other accountbook.

It will also be seen that the jaws cannot injure or tear neighboring leaves, and as the projecting tab is very flexible it will readily yield if struck or pushed by the operator, and consequently the leaf will not be injured. As the tab is stitched around the edge, it is not liable to curl or roll up. The index as arranged is not liable to mar or injure the leaf in any way, as there are no projecting parts or ends. The indexes may be of various shapes or sizes, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3.

The bend in the clip A prevents the latter from slipping too far on the leaf, and the contact of the bend with the edge of the leaf lirmly holds the index'in place.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. As a new article of manufacture, an index consisting of a metal clip having springjaws, and a flexible tab secured to the clip forming a cover for the same and projecting therefrom, the projecting portion of the tab forming a tag, substantially as shown and described.

An index, comprising a clip made of a single piece of spring metal bent upon itself and formed at its free ends with inwardlyextending jaws normally contacting with each other, and a tab made of flexible material and IOO bent upon itself, the said tab engaging with part of its free ends the outer surface of the clip and secured thereto forming a cover for the same', the remaining portion of the exible tab projecting from the clip, substantially as shown and described.

3. An index, comprising a clip made of a single piece of spring metal bent upon itself and formed at its ends with jaws adapted to engage the article to Which it is applied, a tab made of iiexible material and bent upon itself, the end portions of the tab extending over the clip and secured thereto forming a cover for the sanne, the remaining portions of the tab extending outwardly from the bend of the clip and connected to each other by stitching, substantially as shown and described.

An index, comprising a clip made of a single piece of spring metal, bent over and formed at its ends with a pair of inwardlyextending jaws normally contact-in g With each other and adapted to engage and clamp the leaf of a book7 a tab made of a iiexible material and bent over to engage with part of its free ends the said clip forming a cover for the saine, and a filling secured in the said tab and extending between the bend of the clip and the bend of the tab, substantially as shown and described.
