M. D. PETERSON. COMBINATION WHIP SOCKET AND REIN HOLDER.
No. 586,744. I Patented July 20, 1897.
' (Maw TTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARCIIS D. PETERSON, OF LONG LAKE, MINNESOTA.
COMBINATION WHIP-SOCKET AND RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,744, dated July 20, 1897. Application filed January 23, 1897. Serial No. 620,362. (No model.)
T0 CLZZ whmrt if nuty concern.-
Be it known that I, MARCUS D. PETERSON, residing at Long Lake, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Combination W'hip-Socket and Reindlolder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a combination whip-socket and rein-holder, the object being to provide a device of the kind described which shall be constructed of a single piece of wire and which can be quickly and easily fitted upon a vehicle of any description.
Another object is to construct a combination whip-socket and rein-holder in such a manner that it will be securely held upon the dashboard and prevented from rattling.
Another object is to construct a combination whip-socket and reinholder which will securely hold both atthe same time or either at one time.
\Vith these various objects in view my invention consists, essentially, of a socket com posed of four members, a clip attached to the forward side of the socket for attaching the same to the dashboard, and a clip connected to the rear side of the socket for the purpose of receiving the reins.
The invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings formiugapart of this specification, Figure 1 is a view showing the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the combination whip-socket and reinholder. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. t is a sectional view taken on the line l l of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention I employ a single piece of stout wire, which is bent centrally upon itself to provide a depending clip A, which is adapted to iit over the top of the dashboard. The wire is then bent at B and carried downwardly at O to provide two members of the socket. After forming the side members of the socketthe wire is bent across at right angles, as shown at D, in order to provide the bottom members of the socket and is then bent upwardly to provide the rear side members E of the socket. The wire is then again bent at F and carried downwardly, as shown at G, bent upwardly at H to provide the rein-clip, outwardly at H" to provide the flaring entrance to the rein-clip, and the ends of the wire are then united, thereby forming the combination whip-socket and rein-holder of one piece.
The depending clip formed at the upper end of the socket is adapted to fit over the top of the dashboard and the. upwardly-projecting clip formed at the lower end of the socket is adapted to receive and hold the reins.
The four upright members of the socket securely hold the whip in place and the bottom members D prevent the whip passing through the socket, as most clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4:.
It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap, simple, and efficient c011- struction of combination whip-socket and rein-holder, which will thoroughly carry out all of the objects for which it is intended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A combination whip-socket and reinholder, formed of a single piece of wire and comprising the clip A, the bends B, the me1nbers O, D and E, providing the socket, the bends F, members G and II, all arranged and adapted to operate, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described rein holder or supporter comprising a socket having the side members substantially as described, the b0ttom bars, a depending clip or clamp adapted to engage the dashboard, an upwardlyextending clip constructed as described for the reception of the reins, the upwardly-extending portions of said clip being fiared'or curved outwardly for the purpose set forth.
MARCUS D. PETERSON.
