NON REF'lLLABLE BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,719, dated July 20, 1897.
Application filed April '7} 1897. Serial No. 631,093. (No model) I end State of Connecticut, have in ventedcertsin new and useful Improvements in Nonliefilleble Bottles; and Ido hereby declare the following to be t-full, clear, and exact descrip- Lion of the invention, such as will enable othcrs skilled int-he srt to which it appertziins to ins-kc and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in non-refillable bottles, the object being to provide improved valve mechanism within the neck thereof to control the passage of fluid therethrough and prevent refilling after the bottle has been initially filled.
To the accomplishment of this end my in Yention consists in valve mechanism embody; lug certain novel features of construction, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be her insi'tcr more fully described, and spcciliczill y set forth in the appended clsini.
. in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is u. central.vertical section of a bottle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the valve-chamber removed. Fig.
U is u IJClSPCCllYO View of unio'diiied form of valve-chinnberl Fig. l is at central vertical sectional view thereof; and Fig. is u horizoutel section through the VZLlVG-CllU11lJQl', taken on it line with the spring-pressed coufining lil'OjllCtlOllti thereof.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
lief ring to the drmvings, the numeral 1 designates the neck of ubottlo provided udjoiniugr the lower end thereoi with a circumifcrcutiul groove 2. 'lhovulvo-chmnher oompriscs acylinder 23, open at the lower end ihcrcoi mid formed with it reduced extremity -l and with an interior ring-shaped lluuge 5, inning; position at the point of intersection of the cylinder and the reduced extremity of said chamber and constituting a valve-seat for :zhell or sphcriczil valve 3. The slotted reduced extremity oi the valve-chamber constituios 2L runway or raceway for the bull.
luordcr to coniiuc the vulvc-chun'iber within i in Figs. 1 and i, the bottle-neck, I have provided the cyliudric be portion 3 thereof with spriugmetal locking devices 8, having one of their ends suitably secured within the said cylinder and their opposite ends provided with lateral locking projections Q, which extend through slots in the cylindcrend project into the circus forentiel groove 2 on the bottleneck 1 and thus prevent the valve-chamber from being withdrawn. By this construct-ion the valvechumber cannot be withdrawn from the bottleneck Without breaking or injuring the some to such an extent that visual evidence of the bottle having been tampered with is given.
In operation it will be seen that as the reduced extremity 4. or" the valve-chamber 3 is of less diameter than the neck of the bottle fluid may freely pass out through the longitudinal slots therein from the bottle body after rinse-sting the valve; but'ihut if any attempt is made to refill or force fluid into the bottle the weight of the said fluid, as well as the gravity of the bull or spherical valve, causes the letter to drop to its sent and. close the bottle-neck. li- Will thus be seen that refilling cannotinke place, even should the bottle be held in horizontal position.
in Figs. 3, 4, end 5 I have shown a. modified construction of valve-chamber. in this construction the cylinder 3 of the vslveeiiamher is adapted to completely occupy the neck, and the reduced hall-raceway it", provided with ihe longitudinal slots 5, is inclosed Within the said cylinder and secured to it ring flange 5" therein, which forms the sent for the bull orsphcricul valve 6. Below the said ring-flange 5 is another ring-flange 11, between which the cylinder is provided at opposite sides with slots 10, through which locking projections 9" extend, which serve the same purpose as the locking projections t) in the embodiment of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In order to form a iiuidtight connection between the inner wull of the bottle-neck and the i'ulye-chziiulwr, the latter may be provided with suitable pricking mu terisl ii, consisting in the present instance of s sheathing of sheet-rubber. The operai tion of the doyiccihus described is precisely the same as thut'oi theprclorred form, (showm )us above stated. It is to understood thni tho \'.-il\'c-cl1mnhcr is in. i
Having thus described my invention, what i I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is- In a non-refillable bottle, the'combimttion -.with a bottle-neck provided with an internal annular groove near its base, of a valve chamber or casingcomprisinga' hollow cylindrical portion adapted to fit snugly in the base portion of the neck, a reduced cylindrical portion having longitndinally-extending apertures and connected to the larger portion, an intermediate ring or diaphragm connecting the larger and smaller portions of the casing and having an opening toi'orin a valve-seat, ahall-Yalve mounted loosely in the smaller portion of thecasingf, and spring locking devices arranged \vithinlhe hollow larger portionof the caeine and each consisting; of a tint spring secured at ing and hating its free end bent to form acateh projevtion which operates through an opening in the wall olf the casing so as to engage in the groove in the neck, said locking 'detices hein located within the hollow cas ingand above thehorizontal plane of the lower edge thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two suhscrih in g witnesses.
