JOHN C. EDINGER AND FRANK M. CRANE, OF NElVARK, NEXV JERSEY.
BALE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,682, dated July 20, 1897.
Application filed November 5,1896. Serial No. 611,135. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN C. EDINGER and FRANK M. CRANE, citizens of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale- Ties, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bale-ties, and particularly to coupling and fastening devices therefor; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and also comparatively inexpensive and by means of which the ends of a bale-tie may be quickly and easily connected.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of our improved coupling or fastening device for bale-ties; Fig. 2, a side view thereof, and Fig. 3 a transverse section showing the ends of a tie connected therewith.
In the drawings formingpart of this specification the separate parts of our improved coupling or fastening device are indicated by the same letters of reference wherever found throughout the several views, and in the practice of our invention we provide a tie-coupler or fastening device which comprises two similar rectangular plates A and B, which are hinged together at O, and each of which is provided with an oblong slot D.
Pivotally connected with one of the plates A and B is an arm E, and secured to the other plate or formed thereon is alug or projection F.
The arm E is adapted to rest 011 the ends of the plates A and 13 and to hold them rigidly in the extended position when the ends of the tie are connected therewith, so as to hold said ends of the tie in position, or said arm may be swung outwardly into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, in which position of said arm the plates A and B of the coupling or fastening device may be folded together on their hinged connection, so as to release the ends of the tie therefrom.
In Fig. 3 we have shown the opposite ends G and H of a bale-tie and the method of connecting the same by means of our improved coupler or fastening device, and in this operation the plates A and B are folded together, or approximately so, and the ends of the tie are passed in opposite directions through the slots D in each plate, and the plates A and B are then spread or folded outwardly, as shown in the drawings, and the arm E is swung into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This operation clamps and holds the ends of the tie in the position shown in Fig. 3, and the coupling or fastening device cannot slip or move thereon and the opposite ends of the tie will be securely held in position, and whenever it is desired to unfasten the same or disconnect them from the coupling or fastening device the arm E is swung outwardly into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the plates A and B may then be folded together, or approximately so, after which the ends of the tie maybe drawn out, as will be readily understood.
Our improved coupler or fastening device for the ends of a bale-tie is particularly adapted for use in connection with metal ties, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A coupling or fastening device, for the ends of a bale-tie, consisting of two similar plates which are hinged together, each of said plates being provided with a slot or opening, and one of said plates being provided with an arm which is pivoted or hinged thereto, and which is adapted to be swung over the other plate when the said plates are extended, substantially as shown and described.
2. A coupling or fastening device, for the ends of a bale-tie, consisting of two similar plates which are hinged together, each of said our invention We have signed our names, in 10 presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 2d day of November, 1896.
JOHN C. EDINGERQ FRANK M. CRANE.
