Be it known that I, FRANCIS F. PARSONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of N ew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Transmitting Mo tion; and I do hereby declare the following to.
be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
, Mydevice has for its object the creation of a lateral reciprocatory motion such as might, for instance, be utilized in causing a thread or'cord to be wound on a spool ora silk warp on its warp-roll, with the understanding, of course, that mechanical means are furnished to perform the winding, as my device only creates the movement that with the proper intermediate means will carry a thread or warp laterally back and forth from one end of a spool or warp-roll .of any length to the other, and while the spool or warp roll is caused to revolve will thus give the necessary motion to any employed means, winding the thread evenly and smoothly on the said spool or roll.
In many cases of machinery a motion created by the herein -described lever system will prove very valuable. The component elements of this lever system and their method of operation with each otherI shall now proceed to describe, and in so doing will call attention to the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the dilferent views. The lever A, referred to as the traverseregulator, is constructed in the following .the hand-wheel C to the right or to the left.
Projecting from and forming part of the nut G is a pivot-pin G, which passes through a guiding-block B,.which latter is secured in the guide-arm B, so as to have afree up-anddown motion in said guide-arm, moving consequently with the pin G. The guide-arm B is pivoted appropriately in a bearing H and is the lever in the herein-described system which will receive the motive power at a point indicated by the circle Z in any suitable Ine-,
chanical manner-as, for instance, by eccentric disks, cam combinations, &c., sufiicient for explanatory purposes-that is to say, that any motion administered to this lever pushing it in the direction of arrow 1 to a second position indicated by the dotted lines and back again to its original position will meet the requirements of my invention. The guidearm B is constructed with an oblong slot B" at one end which contains, as above stated, the guiding-block B, said nut B kept in its position in the guide-slot B by the disk 13 and finally by a stop-ring B, secured to the end of thetraverse-regulator nut-pin Gbya pin B The traverse-regulator has, furthermore, cast on it at, the bottom end two short projections L and L between which is pivoted one end of link E, the other end of said link E being attached to the lever D, which is the lever that finally transfers the lateral reciprocatory movement to any part or parts of mechanical means that may be intermedt ate between the said lever D and the object through the end of pivot-pin D Lever D is pivoted in abearingM by means of pin M, and this pin M represents the fulcrum for lever D, around which the lateral reciprocatory movement takes place that is the object of my invention.
I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to a single fulcrumed lever, aslever D, and that if the pin or bolt M was prolonged to any reasonable length and supported any number of arms, like the upper part N of lever D, as shown in Fig. 5, the conceptive idea remains the same; and any such multiplication of arms N N N &c., would constitute an infringement on my invention. It will now be readily seen that if a motive power be applied at point Z on guide arm B by appropriate mechanical means, thus giving a motion to guide-arm B from the full-lined illustration of the guidearm in the direction of the arrow 1 to thedotted-line representation of said arm and back again said motion will be transmitted through traverse-regulator A to link E and finally to lever D, whose upper arm N or arms N N N .&c., attached, respectively, to the pin M or to a prolonged pin M will give a lateral reciprocatory movement, to any mechanical meanswhere such a movement is sought for, which was the desired object. The length of the stroke back and forth is regulated by the traverse-regulator, from whence the term traverse-regulator applied is derived, inasmuch as it regulates the traverse movement at the end of part N of lever D. This is done by manipulating hand-wheel 0 so as to move the nut G up or down. In moving it upward it is obvious the stroke will be lengthened, as it will move guide-arm B with a longer arc,with the pinattachin g said guidearm to the bearing Has a center for the arc and a consequent longer radius, and when the nut G is at the bottom of the traverseregulator the corresponding arc will have its shortest radius and consequent shortest arc and thereon attendant shortest stroke. The three bearings F, H, and M will be attached immovably to any part or parts consistent with the locality and circumstances where this lever system may be used and are, mathematically speaking,three fixed centers around which this lever system moves.
W'hatI consequently claim, and desire to secure protection for by Letters Patent of the United States, is y 1. In means for transmitting motion, the combination of the following elements: two levers each pivoted to a stationary bearing, a pivot connecting said levers, means whereby said pivot can be adjusted longitudinally of said levers, a third lever, and a link connecting said third lever with one of the firstnamed levers, substantially as described.
2. In means for transmitting motion, the combination of the following elements: two levers each pivoted to a stationary bearing and each being longitudinally slotted, a nut movable in the slot of one of said levers, a guiding-block movable in the slot of the other lever and pivoted to said nut, means for simultaneously adjusting said nut and block in FRANCIS F. PARSONS.
