To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatLWILLiAn WEIGHT BECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sebastopol, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in telephones, the object being to provide an improved construction of holder adapted to support the tele phone-receiver in close proximity to the ear of the user in order that the hands of the user may be free to hold a pad of paper and write down the telephonemessage, if desired.

To this end my invention consists in a bracket arranged alongside the telephone and telescopic arms connected therewith and adapted to receive and hold the telephonereceiver, whereby the said receiver may be adjusted upward or downward, as desired, to suit the height of the person using the telephone.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a telephone embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the holder attachment. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same; and Fig. et is a detail view, on an enlarged scale, showing the construction of the telescopic arms.

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several views.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a bracket provided with a back plate 2, having at opposite sides openings through which screws or other suitable fastening devices may be passed to secure the bracket to the wall or board adjacent the telephone 3. The bracket is also provided with two spring-metal side walls 4, having their front ends converging to form a narrow opening 5 at the front thereof, the said side walls being adapted to serve as clamps to sustain the telescopic arms on which the re ceiver is mounted, as will be hereinafter described.

The arm 6 is provided at one end with a short slot 7, through which a set-screw 10,

extending through threaded openings in the said side walls 4, projects, said set-screw serving both as a pivot for said arm and as an adjusting device for adjusting the clampin g-walls at relatively to each other. A second arm 8 is secured to the said arm 6 by means of runners or clips 9, whereby it is adapted to be adjusted thereon, a setscrew 10 extending through one of the said clips or runners and connected with the arm 6, being provided to impinge against the said arm 8 and thereby hold it rigidly secured in any desired adjusted position. This arm 8 is provided at its outer or free end with a pivoted clip 11, adapted to receive and hold the telephone-receiver 12. By this construction it will be seen that the arm 0 of the device may be adjusted nearer to or farther from the telephone and held in the desired adjusted position by the spring clamping-Walls of the bracket, and that the said extensible arm 8 may be adjusted vertically on the said arm 6 to suit the height of the person using the telephone.

In practice, when the device is out of use, the telephone-receiver 12 is turned to a vertical position on the pivoted hook 11 and the neck portion 13 thereof rested upon the hook or hanger 1a of the telephone in order to cut out the electric current in the ordinary manner. Then the receiver is detached from the said hanger, the telephone-switch is open and transmission of speech may take place, but when the receiver rests upon the said hanger the current is out out and transmission of speech ceases.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. An attachment for telephones, comprising a bracket having two forwardly and inwardly projecting springmetal clampingwalls forming a narrow opening at the front thereof, a plate or arm provided with a short slot, a screw-bolt projecting through said slot and clamping-walls and serving as a combined pivot and adjusting device, and a second arm provided with a clip adapted to receive and hold the telephone-receiver and adj ustably connected with the arm first named, substantially as described.

2. An attachment for telephones, compristo a horizontal position to enable the neck of the receiver to be inserted in the said telephone-hanger, to cut out the electric current, substantially as described.
