Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARLINGTON D. BRITTAIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone Receiver-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to telephone receiver holders and the invention has for its object to provide a novel attachment for adjustably supporting the receiver of a telephone in a useful position, whereby it will not be necessary to hold the same to ones ear.

The detail construction of my improved telephone receiver holder will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claim, and referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a telephone equipped with my improved receiver holder, Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the swivel portion of the receiver holder, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same partly in elevation, Fig. 4 is a front elevation of my improved receiver holder as secured to a wall adjacent to a different type of telephone from that illustrated in Fig. l of the drawing, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the receiver holder, Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the receiver holder.

In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated an ordinary wall telephone 1 having a battery box 2, a hook or switch arm 3, and a receiver 4.

My invention resides in a device for holding' the receiver 4 adjacent to the transmitter 5 of the telephone, said device being preferably secured to the battery box 2 upon the right side thereof, but as will be presently described it may be readily secured to the wall or suitable support adjacent to the telephone.

The receiver holder comprises a plate 6 having a central threaded opening 7 and circumferentially arranged openings 8, the latter openings being used when securing the plate to the battery box by screws or similar fastening means. In the central opening 7 is mounted an L-shaped rod 9 having its ends threaded. A lock nut 10 is employed to firmly hold the rod in engagementiwith the plate 6. Upon the outer threaded end of the rod 9 is mounted an upwardly extending arm 11, said arm being held upon the rod 9 by nuts 12. Pivotally connected to the upper end of the arm 11 by a bolt and nut 14 is an extension 15, and upon the outer end of the extension 15 is adjustably mounted by a bolt and nut 16 a pivotal head 17. The head 17 is adjusted by a bolt and nut 18, and carries a strap 19 for clamping the receiver 4.

In connection with the holder just described, I employ a weighted body or dummy receiver 20, this receiver being attached to the telephone or to the wall contiguous thereto, whereby the receiver may rest upon the hook or switch arm 3 when the telephone is not being used, but can be easily removed when it is desired to receive a message through the receiver 4. The dummy receiver 20 serves functionally the same purpose as if the receiver 4 were mounted upon the hook 3, as is the customary practice.

In Figs. 4 and 6 of the drawing, I have illustrated a slight modification wherein the L-shaped arm 9 is dispensed with and a rod 9 employed, this rod being used to support my improved holder from a wall or support adjacent to the telephone.

From the foregoing description, it will be obvious that I have devised a novel telephone holder for supporting a receiver, the numerous adjustments of the holder permitting same being positioned to be convenient to the ear of a person talking over the telephone.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-

In a telephone receiver holder, an attaching-plate, an Lshaped arm disposed horizontally and secured at its inner end to said plate, a vertical arm secured at its lower end to the outer end of said L-shaped arm, a horizontal arm pivoted at its outer end to the upper end of said vertical arm, and a head adjustably connected to the inner end of said horizontal arm, said head comprising two members one of which is connected to said arm and the other of which is pivoted to have a partial rotative movement with respect to the member connected to the arm, and a strap carried by said second member to encircle and hold the telephone receiver.
