Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JRGEN DUBBELDE, OF-BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN J. DUBBELDE, OF SAME PLACE.
LOCK-HINGE.v
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 586,355, dated July 13, 1897.
Application filed October 3,1896. Serial No. 607,730. (No model.)
.To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JRGEN DUBBELDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved shutter fastener or bower, the object of the invention being to provide a shutter-hinge which shall have means combined with it so as to comprise a single article of merchandise for holding the shutter in any position partly open, entirely open, or entirely closed.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure lis a top view of the combined hinge and bower, the window-frame and shutter being shown in horizontal section. Fig. 2 is a side view of the hinge and bower projected from Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a view of a broken portion of the inside of the shutter, showing the operating-lever and cam-fastener. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of oneleaf of the hinge. Fig.
G is a view separately of the operating-lever.
The leaf A of the hinge, which is to be attached to the window-frame A', has a pintlepin h, like ordinary shutter-hinges, but inaddition is provided with a fixed or stationary cogged disk C, whose center is coincident with the axis of the said pintle-pin. The other leaf D, which is to be attached to the shutter D', has the usual eye part e, which takes over the pintle-pin, and two flanges e', projecting at an angle to the leaf, but in addition is provided with bearings f fora rockshaft g, which extends (when the hinge is in position) through the shutter from the inside to the outside. On its outer end this rock-shaft has a pendent arm h, which hangs down in close relation to the rim of the cogdisk and is provided with notched teeth t', which engage with the teeth of said disk. The inner end of the rock-shaft has a squared head j, and a lever k is fitted on this head, and said lever has position adjoining the inner surface Z of the shutter.
A slight rocking movement of the rock- 5 is a perspective view of the rock-shaft. Fig. l
vices.
shaft g causes the pendent arm h to swing to 5o and from the cogged disk C, and thus the notched teeth t' on said pendent arm will engage with and disengage from the teeth or cogs on said disk. The broken lines in Fig.
l at the right-hand side of the pendent arm indicate the extent of the swinging movement of said arm. The lever 7o on the inner side of the shutter serves as a handle for operating the rock-shaft and its arm. l
The leaf D is secured onto the edge of the 6o shutter, and the two iiangesA e are secured onto the outer face of the shutter, and thereby this leaf is held very firmly.
It will be seen that the shutter D may be fastened by the pendent arm and cog-disk at any desired position partly open, entirely open, or entirely closed.
In order to hold the operating-lever 7c to its down position, at which time the swing-arm h and cog-disk are engaged, a cam-fastener 7o m is employed. Thiscam-fastener is in the shape of a hook, having at its upper end a pivot n, which secures it to the shutter.
It will be seen the lower cam part will bear on top of the lever k and hold the lever down, and thereby keep the device locked. When the cam-hook is swung to the right and the lever k isy raised, the hook part may then take under the lever and hold it elevated, and thereby keep the pendent arm h disengaged 8o from the cog-disk.
This combined hinge and bower is simple and cheap in construction and gives all the advantageous results of more expensive de- Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a shutter-hinge and bower the combination of a hinge-leaf, A, for attachment to the window-frame provided with a pintle-pin and 9o a iixed cog-disk whose center is coincident with the axis of the said pin; a hinge-leaf, D, for attachment to the shutter having the usual eye part which takes on the pintle-pin and provided on the side attached to the shutter with bearings, f; a rock-shaft turning in said bearings and having on the outer end a swing-arm, h, which swings laterally to and from the said cog-disk; L lever, 7a, on In testimony whereof I ax my signature the inner end of the said rook-shaft; and a in the presence of two Witnesses.
