CUTTING ATTACHMENT FOR PLOWS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,797, dated July 6, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, UMPHRY M. STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mo- Gregor, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented certain newand use ful Improvements in Cutting Attachments for Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The present invention has for its object to provide the landside of a plow with an ad justable cutting-blade and means for operating it, whereby cotton-stalks and the like at the bottom of the furrow may be out.

lhe invention consists of a cutting attachment for plows constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter de scribed and claimed.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of a plow, showing my improved cutting attachment applied thereto; Fig. 2, a perspective View of the slotted bracket, show .ing the cutter connected thereto in dotted lines.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a plow of the usual construction, and B the landside thereof, to which is adj ustably connected by suitable bolts a the slotted bracket 0. The bracket is formed with a longitudinal slot 19, through which the bolts (1 extend and also through the landside of the plow, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The outer end of the bracket 0 has a stud c, screw-threaded at its outer end to receive a screw-threaded nut cl.

The cutting-blade D may be of any preferred form and construction and is provided at one end with a sleeve 6, which sleeve passes over the end of the stud c and is held thereon by the nut d, thus forming a pivotal connection between the end of the bracket and the cutting-blade, so that the blade may be raised or lowered.

The means employed for operating the adjustable blade consists of an upright rod E, loosely connected to the blade D in any wellknown and suitable manner, so that the rod can move laterally as well as vertically.

One of many means that may be employed for connecting the end of the rod E to the rod an eye 9 and connecting it to the ring.

The rod has a series of notches it near its upper end, which in the present instance is formed by bending the rod in a zigzag direction, as shown, and at the upper end of the rod is a handle 2'. The notched end of the rod passes up through an L-shaped slotted looking and releasing bar F, secured to the handie-bars of the plow. The slotted bracket 0, which is horizontally and longitudinally adjustable, enables the cutting blade to be brought nearer to or farther from the end of the landside B of the plow to adapt it for-different kinds of work.

When it is desired to raise the cuttingblade 0 from the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the notched portion of the rod E is moved along laterally until it is brought in engagement with the right-angle portion 7a of the slotted bar F, which will release the rod and enable it to be moved vertically, and when brought back to the position shown will be locked in its adjusted position.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A cutting attachment for plows, consisting of a bracket having a longitudinal slot and means for connecting it to the landside of the plow by which said bracket is capable of horizontal adjustment, a cutting-blade pivotally connected to the bracket, and means for raising and lowering said blade on its pivotal connection, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A cutting attachment for plows, consisting of a cutting-blade pivotally connecting with the landside of a plow, and means for raising and lowering the blade, consisting of a notched rod connecting with the blade and an L-shaped slotted releasing and locking bar with which said rod engages, as set forth.
