SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,787, dated July 6, 1897.

and JAMES F. BLACKWOOD and JAMES P. OAHILL, residing at Charleston, Charleston county, South Oarolina,citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ick-Pullers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled-in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in wick-pullers, the object ofthe same being to provide a simple device whereby wicks may be readily, quickly, and conveniently inserted into any lamp-burner.
The invention consists of a bodkin made up of a Strip of sheet metal having a hook pivoted thereto whose inwardly-extending ends are adapted to project through openings in said strip and between which and said strip the lamp-wick is adapted to be clamped.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of our device, showing a lanip-wick clamped in the same in the position it assumes in being inserted into a lamp-burner. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device detached, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
Our improved device consists of a bodkin 1, made up of a strip of metal having a pair of slots 2 2 therein at the points near its lower end, through which a hook 3 is adapted to be 7 passed. The said hook is made up of a strip of wire bent at its central point and passed through the openings or perforations 2, with its outer ends formed with flanges 4 thereon, which are adapted to be inserted through the end of the wick 5 and through perforations 6 in the strip 1.
'In using our device hook 3 is thrown outwardly and one end of the wick 5 is inserted between it and the said strip 1. The said strip is then inserted through the burneropening, drawing the wick after it. As the edges of the hook 3 are engaged by the sides of the burner-opening the said hook is forced into closer engagement with said wick and clamps it more tightly the greater the pressure that is put upon it.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described wick-puller, consisting of a bodkin or strip of sheet metal having perforations therein and a hook made up of a strand of wire passed through two of said perforations and having inturned ends between which and said strip a lamp-wick is.
