RICHARD SMITII \VILLIAMS, OF SUMMIT, NEIV JERSEY.
FRUIT-BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,441, dated June 15, 1897. Application filed July 23, 1895. Serial No. 556,873. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD SMITH WIL- LIAMs,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Summit, county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Baskets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has relation to fruit baskets or boxes; and the object thereof is to provide baskets or boxes which are adapted to be packed in 'inclosing frames or crates; and with this and other objects in view this invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully disclosed in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are elevations and sectional views, respectively, of one of my improved baskets or boxes. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a wire box or basket carrier. Fig. 4 is a view of one of my improved baskets or boxes provided with said carrier.
Similar letters designate like parts through the several views.
In the construction of my invention I employ baskets or boxes D, formed of paper or thin sheets of wood and provided with perforations in the body portion thereof, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
My improved basket or box D is preferably formed from blanks cut out in the usual manner and having sides afterward folded together so as to form the box or basket, the said sides being also perforated, as shown and desoribed,'and connected with each box 01' basket is a wire frame. (Shown in perspective in Fig. 3 and connected with one of the baskets or boxes in Fig. 4.)
The wire frame or support of a box or baske t inclosing portion is made, preferabl y, from a single wire and bent into the form shown at H II, J J, and K K, the frame thus desig nated being adapted to be connected with the basket, as shown in Fig. 4, in which position the parts H will extend upward from the bottom of the basket or box and inserted through holes L, formed in the sides thereof near the top, while the hooks K, formed in the sides J of the support, are inserted through holes M, formed in the side of the basket or box adjacent to the sides in which the holes L are formed. Formed in the upper ends of the side parts H are loops or eyes N, adapted to receive the ends of the wire handle 0, which are inwardly directed, as shown in Fig. 3, and when thus applied the handle 0 may be bent or folded within the top of the basket or box, as will be readily understood, and will not interfere with the top or cover of the crate when the latter is secured in position over said box or basket, as shown in Fig. 2.
It is evident that changes in and modification of the construction shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make such alterations and changes therein as fairly come within the scope thereof.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A fruit basket or box formed of paper or thin wooden strips said basket being formed by the sides being folded together, the said sides being perforated and having a projecting flange or rim adapted to support the basket in a suitable frame or crate and a wire frame or support for said basket and which is made preferably from a single piece of wire and being adapted to be connected with the basket, substantially as described.
2. A fruit basket or box formed of paper or thin wood the sides of which are folded together to form the basket, said basket having an outwardly-directed rim or flange and a wire frame inclosing said basket and consisting of the outwardly-directed rectangular portion adapted to be connected with the bottom of the basket and a support or handle connected with the upper end of said portion where the same are united or joined together, substantially as described.
3. A fruit basket or box formed of paper or thin wooden strips, the sides of which are folded together to form the basket, said basket having an outwardlydirected rim or flange and a wire frame constructed of a single piece of wire bent to form outwardly-directed rectangular portions, the sides of which are united at their upper ends and the bottom or horizontal portion being provided with In testimony that I claim the foregoing as hooks adapted to impinge against the sides my inventionI have signed my name, in pres- 10 0f the basket and a handle connected With ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 22d day the sides of the frame at their upper connecof July, 1895.
tion or projection the inwardly-directed end RICHARD SMITH WILLIAMS. of said handle being adapted to be connected \Vitnesses: or engaged with the sides of the crate, sub- 2 L. M. MULLER,
stantially as described. S L. IIAWKsHURsT.
