LEWIS L. I-IEPBURN, OF NEIV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO TIIE l MARLIN FIRE ARMS COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
'MAGAZINE-GUN.
' SPECIFICATION forming part ofv Letters' Patent No. 584,177, dated .Iune 8, 1897.
Application led February 12,1897. Serial No. 623,033. (No model-l l which the following isa full, clear, and eX-v act specification. l
My invention relates to improvements in firearms, and has for its object the provision of a simple, inexpensive, and effective means whereby the barrel portion may be readily separated from the stock portion for convenience in packing and transportation, another main object of the invention being the accessibility of all of the operating parts of the firearm, whereby'the same may be cleaned, readjusted, or replaced by other parts should the same' be desirable.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isa side elevation of one form of firearm containing my invention, the ends of the same being broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the barrel portion of the invention and a portion of the breech-frame. Fig. 3 is a similar viewof that portion of the breech-frame connected to the stock shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view of a detail. Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line a: fc, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2, with the exception of the breechbolt, which is removed.. Fig. 7 is a-side elevation of the rearm shown'in Fig. 1, the view being taken on the opposite sidevof the firearm, the side plate being broken away to illustrate the internal construction.
Figs. 8, 9, 10, and 11 are diiterent views of the breechbolt, and Figs. r12 and 13 are differentviews of the firing-pin.
Similar letters refer to similar parts.
A is the stock of the firearm.
D is the barrel portion of the firearm, the form of arm illustrated being generally termeda magazine-iirearm, in which a magazine is arranged underneath the barrel B in the usual manner and adapted to carry a number of cartridges, which are successively released and thrown into the breech portion ot the arm, where by suitable mechanism, such as, forin stance, illustrated and described .tion of the firearm.
in my earlier United States Letters Patent, No. 434,062, of August 12, 1890, they are automaticallyinserted into the barrel, fired, retracted, and ejected at the will of the operator..
D is a side platepreferably carried4 by the barrel portion B. This side plate also, by'
preference, carries, in the case of .a breechloading gun, the breech-bolt E.
F is a side plate carried by the stock por- In the case of a breechloading arm a portion or all of the breech mechanism may be carriedby the platevF, the said plates D and F forming, by preference, the side of the casing in which the breech mechanism is housed.
G is a reinforce or enlargement at the rear end of the barrel B, by which reinforce thel fore-end II, commonly used, may receive its support.
The parts thus described are provided with means whereby the barrel portion may be readily detached from the stock portion to permit the parts to be packed in a small compass, said means being described as follows: The side plate F is provided with a tenon F', the same projecting into an undercut recess G' in the reinforcey GQ At the rear end of plate D is formed a tenon D', adapted to project under an abutment or projection I on the upper tang of the stock portion of the arm. Adjacent to the tenonI D' is a recess D2to correspond substantially to the shape of 'the abutment I, so that when the parts are assembled the abutment I will enter therein, preventing vertical'displacement of the parts.
To prevent the lateral disengagement of the part-s, any well-known means may be provided, the means illustrated being simply a screw or small bolt J, passing freely through one of said plates D Fand engaging the other plate and serving, when screwed tightlyinto place, to prevent said detachment.- The bolt J is provided with a suitably-enlarged head J', whereby thc same may be operated by the thumb and foreinger. The recess D2 in the rear of the plate l) is preferably cut at an angle to give a'dovetailed formation to the tenon D', said tenen bein g adapted to enter a correspondinglyshaped recess between the abutment I -and that part of the stock portion lettered Q. By this last-named means longitudinal displacement is guarded-against.
The operation of detaching the stock porion from the barrel comprises, first, loosening the screw J; second, swingingl the stock iso. as to free the tenon D' from its recess, and,`
the barrel portion, the same being described as follows:
K is a top plate, the under surface o f which lords a bearing for the top of the breechol t.
L is a shoulder projecting inwardly from the plate D toward the rear of and under;
neath the top plate K and forming .a lower" support or bearing for said breech-bolt. In one side of thebreech-boltis formed a groove M. 'N is al rib carried by the shoulder L and projecting into said groove M, by which means the said breech-bolt is prevented from becolnn ing accidentally detached from its support.
R is a spring-ejector of the ordinary construction. To permit the breech-bolt to be detached, I provide a smallfopening or recess in the side,of the breech-boltadjacent to the 1 groove therein'and of a depth equal substantially to the depth of said groove, and. indicated by the letter O', Fig. 9, and seen in Figs.
ldinal movement, inmortise P 2 and 8, so thatwhen the vstock portion has been removed from the barrel portion and the breech-bolt has been retracted, so that the opening or recess O will lie adjacent to the rib end, the breech-bolt mayreadily be slipped laterally out of engagement with the frame.
P is a ring-pin capable of limitedlongituthe breech-bolt E, the same being held in place when the parts are' assembled by the top plate K and by a downward projection P2, passing through an opening P5 in said breechbolt. It Will be seen that when the breechbolt is detached from the frame the firing-pin may-readily be removed for the purpose of cleaning, and the bore of the barrel may also be 'readily inspected or cleaned, no obstruction beimgi-n line therewith.'
