SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,960, dated June 8, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JULIA E. S. WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in the countyof Chenango and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Heaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in portable heaters; and it has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple and cheap heater by which the air in the room is not only heated, but the foul air removed and the smoke and gases from the heater conducted out of the building or room in which the heater is placed. 1 provide for storing and utilizing the heat generated by the burning wicks and also for controlling the amount of heat by turning the wicks high or low with no unpleasant odors or gases escaping in the room.

The improvement embodies an oil-stove with a removable drum above the same with plates for retarding the heat and causing it to take a circuitous course through the same. The stove is by preference fiat-bottomed, rest ing on a tray, and the fine from the top may lead out of a window or other exit.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.

The invention in this instance resides in the peculiar combinations and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a substantially central vertical section through my improvement. Fig. 2 is a cross-section.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both views.

Referring now to the details of the drawiugs by letter, A designates the oil tank or receptacle, which is preferably rectangular in form and flat-bottomed. It is provided with a plurality of wicks B, which are preferably of the fiat variety.

C is the tray upon which the stove rests, and D is the radiator or drum, preferably rectangular in form and of sheet-iron. It rests upon the tray and may be braced by the vertical rods E. Within the drum, near the bottom, is the plate F, arranged above the upper ends of the wicks, which are arranged in the slots (t, provided therefor, and this plate is for the purpose of deflecting the heat toward the surface of the drum, there being a space around the edges of the same through which the heat passes, as indicated by the arrows. The edges of the plate are preferably turned up, as indicated. at Z).

G is the upper plate, similar to the plate F, only reversely arranged, having a space around the edges thereof and the said edges being turned down at an angle, as seen at g.

At the top of the drum is the collar H, to which is connected the hot-air chamber H, which is conical-shaped, as shown, and to the upper end of which may be connected a suitable pipe I, lcadin g to the outer air through the window or other exit. This pipe or fine is made adjustable, so as to be readily fitted as circumstances may require.

The drum and other parts may be made as ornamental in appearance as may be desired. The heater is designed primarily for use in warming small rooms which have no chimney or permanent flue within reach.

Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

A portable heater comprising the tank with its wicks, the supporting-tray, the radiator or drum, the deflecting-plates therein, and the hot-air chamber at the top of the drum and having a flue connected therewith and means for adjusting the same, substantially as specified.

2. The portable heater described, comprising the tank with its wicks, the tray, the

drum, the lower plate with its edges turned upward and outward, the upper plate with its edges turned downward and outward, the conical hot-air chamber at the top of the drum, and the adjustable flue connected with the said hot-air chamber, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
