TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentiNo. 583,752, dated June 1, 1897.
Application filed December l, 1896. Serial No. 6] .4,l5l. (No model.)
land, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make use thesame.
My invention relates to an improved table which, in addition to being adapted to all of the ordinary uses of a table, is also a worktable and a desk. The desk part of the table is ordinarily concealed from view but it may .be uncovered and used without disturbing anything which may be upon the table-top.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved table. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same when the top has been swung around to uncover the desk, and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same parallel with the bar'C.
Referring to the parts by letters, A represents the box-like body of the table, which is supported by four legs a of the desired length. To the inner faces of the sides a', near their top edges, the cleats a2 are secured. These cleats support the desk-top, which consists of the transverse bar C, the cover c, which is hinged thereto, and the board c', rigidly Xed to the bar, which board constitutes the rear part of the desk-top and is flush with the t-op of the body. At the right 'rear corner the board c' may be cut away, and by means of the vertical partitions c2 c3, secured, respectively, to the board c and bar C, and the bottom c4, secured to the said partitions, a depressed receptacle for the ink-stand may be formed. One or more partitions c5 may be secured to the under side of the board c', thereby dividing the space below it into convenient pigeonholes. I prefer to permanently connect all of the described parts constituting the desk-top and to allow it to rest loosely upon the cleats a', for therebyit may be easily removed to permit the desk to be cleaned. It may, however, be permanently secured in the described position, if desired.
D represents the table-top, which is large enough to overhang the body. The rear lefthand corner of this top is pivoted on a vertical pivot to the corresponding corner of the body or to the board c', as the case may be. 'lo that corner of this top D which is diagonally across fromthe pivot is secured a leg cl,which supports the said corner of the top. This leg is preferably provided with a caster d2.
Ordinarily the table-top is in the relative position shown in Fig. l, and when t-he table is in the condition therein shown it may be used like any ordinary table; but when one wishes to use the desk the top D is swung upon its pivot, the caster d2 rolling upon the lioor, to the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position its outer corner is supported by the leg CZ. It is obviously unnecessary to remove the articles which are on the table-top to permit this movement. The desk being uncovered may be used as any desk may.
E represents a transversely-movable workdrawer which is suspended beneaththe body in the cleats e e, which extend from one side to the other, whereby the drawer may be pulled out on either side.v
Having described my invention, I claim- In a table, a suitably-supported box-like body composed of connecting sides a and a bottom, there being cleats a2 on the inner walls of some of the sides, a desk-top removably supported upon said cleats, and comprising the transverse bar C, the board c', the cover hinged to said, bar, vertical partitions 0203 and bottom c4, said desk-top being entirely inclosed and prevented from lateral movement when horizontal by said sides, combined with the overhanging table-cover D pivoted on a vertical pivot near one corner to one of the sides near a corner of the body, and having a leg secured to the diagonally opposite corner, all arranged and constructed substantially as described and operating as and for the purpose specied.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARY E. JOHNSTON.
