IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of LcttersPatent No. 58,361, 4dated September 25, 1866.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAR SToBwAssEn, of Berlin, Kingdom of' Prussia, have invented an Improved Lamp; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which willenable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying1 drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a lamp provided -with my improvement; Fig. 2, an enlarged exterior view of the lower part of the fountain ofl the same Fig. 3, an enlarged vertical section of the lower part of the fountain and the socket in which it is fitted. a: a', Fig. 4, indicate the line of section. This invention relates to a new and improved lamp of that class which are provided with elevated fountainsthat is, lamps which have their fountains above the level of the burner, so that the same may, by static pressure, be provided with oil until the fountain is exhausted or its contents entirely consumed.
The difficulty hitherto attending this class of lamps has been the liability of` the burner being unduly supplied with the oil or burning material, and the danger of explosions if a volatile oil be usedf-such, for instance, as the higher grades of' coal-oils-and also the danger of the spilling of oil and the escape of the same from the fountain in adjusting the latter to and detaching it from the lamp-diffculties .which it is believed are fully obviated by my invention.
A represents the base, and B an upright rod attached centrally thereto. C is a slide fitted on the rod B, and secured at any desired height thereon by a set-screw, a. This fountain may be of any desired form or shape at its Lipper part, above the socket F; but its lower part, e, is of cylindrical form, and has a cylinder, f, fitted upon it so as to turn freely. The cylinder f also has a rib, a", attached vertically to it to pass into the groove or recess b in cylinder G, and said rib has a notch, b, made in it to receive the pin t'ofl the cylindrical part e of' the fountain, said pin passing through a horizontal slot, cx, in j'. The lower end of the part e ofl the fountain has a screwplug, I, fitted in it, and said part e has a hole, g, made in it, and the cylinder f has a corresponding tube, h, made in it, as shownin Figs. 3, 4:, and 5.
The lower cylindrical part, e, of the fountain has a pin, t', projecting from it, said pin being of such a size as to fit into the groove or recess b of the cylinder G, and also to pass into the horizontal groove c.
The fountain El is filled with oil when detached from the lamp, the screw-plug I being removed for that purpose, or the cylinder ji turned on the part e until the holes gh are brought in line with each other, the fountain being inverted while being filled. When the fountain is filled the cylinder f is. 'turned back on e until the notch b* in the rib cx covers the pin t' of e, and the lower part of the fountain may then be fitted in the socket F, the rib ctx on j' passing down in the groeve or recess b in cylinder G, which cannot be done unless the piu t' is within the notch bx of' the rib, as the top of' cylinder Gwould prevent it, and when the cylinder j' is turned-on c to cause the notch bX to cover the pin t' the holes g h are out of line with each other, and, consequently,
no oil can escape from the fountain while the lower part of the latter is being adjusted in the socket. (See Fig. 5.)
p After the lower part of the fountain is adj usted in the socket F, the fountain H is turned from left to right, as indicated by arrow l, Fig. 5, and the pin i moves in the horizontal groove c, the holes g h being thereby made to register more or less fully or perfectly with each other, according to the quantity of oil required to be fed to the burner; and in order to withdraw the fountain H from the burner the fountain requires to be turned in the conltrary direction, as indicated by arrow 2, Fig.
' time, as the supply of oil to the burner is thereby cut off, and the height of the flame may also be regulated by increasing or diminishing the supply of oil to the burner.A
The arrangement is extremely simple, and
. is not liable to get out of repair. The supply of oil to the burner may be regulated, as required, with the greatest facility, so that there need be no danger of an overflow from the burner, and no danger of oil escaping from the fountain, either in adjusting the fountain to the lamp or removing it therefrom.
I do not claim the Argand burner, for that is an old and well-known device; but
I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent- 'lhe pin fi, attached to the lower cylindrical part, c, of the fountain, and having a cylinder, f, tted loosely on c, and provided with a v ertical rib, a", having a notch, b", made in it, and a horizontal slot, c", in combination with the vertical groove or recess b and the horizontal groove c in the cylinder Gr, which is secured in the socket F, the cylindrical part e of the fountain and the cylinder f having holes g h made in them, land all arranged to operate substantially in the nia-nner as and for the purpose set forth. l
