Description

(No M0de1) W. WARD.
FASTENER FUR TUBS, &c.
No. 583,159. Patented May 25,1897.
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM VARD, OF HARBOR GRACE, NEIVFOUNDLAND.
FASTENER FOR TUBS, 80G.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,159, dated May 25, 1897. Application filed August 20, 1896. Serial No. 603,354. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM VARD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Harbor Grace, Newfoundland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in fasteners designed for use in fastening the lids or covers of butter-tubs, (itc. and the object is to provide a fastener of this nature which, while securely holding the lid or cover in place when so desired, may be operated to admit of the removal of the cover or lid without extracting any of the nails primarilyT used in fastening the same.
Obviously many advantages will be derived by tha use of these fasteners, among which is the facility with which the contents of the tub may be displayed to intending purchasers, and this in the butter trade is a serious desideratum.
AMy invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of a butter-tub having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar View, the fastener in position to admit of the removal of the cover; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the fastener removed.
A designates the butter-tub, B the cover, and O the loops or bands, all of any ordinary or usual construction. W'ithin the inner loop or band of the cover I arrange the fasteners D, preferably three in number, and these are formed out of any suitable metal, and I will now proceed to describe their peculiar construction.
That part of the fasteners which is attached to the cover I will term the member d, and this member is provided at or near its lower end with a slit CZ', partly formed in the member d and partly in the member d2, adjacent to and forming part of the fastener. Continuing, this member d2 terminates in a short member cl3 at right angles thereto and parallel with the member d, sufficient space being left between the two latter to admit of a nail E, which is driven into the tub and thus prevents the lifting of the lid, all of which is clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings. The lid or cover being thus fastened to the tub, it is only necessary to give a slight movement of the fastener to the right, as shown in dotted lines in. Fig. l, which will enable the user to bend over the short member d3 until it comes below the level of the head of the nail E, when a movement to the left of the fastener will admit of the ready removal of the lid or cover, it being only necessary to reverse this operation to refasten the lid.
It will thus be seen that by the use of my invention all necessity of removing the nails is avoided, and that the covers or lids may be rapidly removed and as speedily replaced, thus saving much time, annoyance, and inconvenience, and when the cover or lid is permanently removed the fasteners may be folded up under the cover and out of the way.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fastener for butter-tub covers and other like receptacles, made of pliable metal, having the member d., pivoted to the cover and its lower inner end provided with a notch or slot d', at its junction with the projecting member d2, to receive a retaining-stud E, inserted in the tub between said member d and the adjacent upright member d3, which member is adapted to be bent at a right angle to release the fastener from engagement with the tub, whereby the cover may be detached, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 15th day of July,
WILLIAM WARD. IVitnesses A. GRAHAM MUNN, JOHN FOLEY.
