Description

(Na Monet C. E. 80 O. 0. SWENSON.
COMBINATION TOOL.
Patented May 18, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. SWENSON AND OLIVE C. SI/VENSON, OF CLIFTON, TEXAS.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,834, dated May 18, 1897.
Application filed Julie 3, 1896. Serial No. 594,091. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES E. SWEN- SON and OLIVE O. SwENsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Clifton, in the county of Bosque and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combination-tools. Its objects are to provide a simple, cheap, and durable toole specially adapted for use as a pan or plate lifter or a stove-lid lifter and which may also be used for holding dishes while being washed.
Having these objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features and combinations, as will appear more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is aplan View. Fig. 3 is a front end elevation, and Fig. 4is a sectional detail view of the lower clamp.
A and B designate a pair of levers pivoted at 1 and provided with handles 2 and 3, respectively. These handles are curved, and a bent spring 4, located between them, exerts a tendency to keep the short lower arms of the levers normally separated. The upper handle 2 is provided with a toe 5, adapted for insertion in a stove-lid, so that the device can be used as a stove-lid lifter.
The short arms 6 and 7 of the levers are twisted, so that they will lie in substantially parallel relation.
The numeral 8 designates a clampingplate which is adjustably secured to the upper short arm 6 by a screw-threaded bolt 9 and a thumb-nut 10. The clamping-plate 11 ofthe lower arm 7 is adj ustably secured to said arm by a screw-threaded bolt 12 and a thumbnut 13, but this clamping-plate is also provided with an upwardly and downwardly bent rest 14- Pieces 15 and 16, of any suitable fabricsuch, for instance, as asbestos, cloth, or feltare secured or clamped to the upper and lower short arms 6 and 7, respectively, by the clamping-plate.
We have heretofore described how the tool may be used as a stove-lid lifter. It can also be employed for holding dishes while they are being washed with any preferred form of 5 5 hand-operated dish-washer, thereby obviating the necessity of wetting the hands of the user. In the event of the tool being used as a pan or plate lifter the rest 14 is adapted to guide the sides of the plate or pan in between the short arms of the lever and also to serve as a fulcrum.
The invention can be put to many other usesthan those suggested, and it is also obvious that it might be changed in many immaterial ways. Hence it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise construction herein shown and described, but consider ourselves entitled to such Variations as come within the scope and spirit of our invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A combination-tool comprising levers pivoted together and provided with handles at one end, adjustable clamping-plates on the free arms of the levers, one of said clamping-plates being provided with a downwardlyinclined rest and facing material held in the clamps.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES E. SWVENSON. OLIVE C. SWENSON.
