UNITED STATES EUSEBIO F. GABEZOLA, OF TRENTON, NEWV JERSEY.
WlCK-RAISER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,777, dated May 18, 1897.
Application filed February 19, 1897. $erial N0- 624,15'7. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUSEBIO F. CABEZOLA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wick-Raisers; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to lamps, and has especial reference to means for raising tubular wicks; and it consists in certain improvements in construction, which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the bowl of a lamp provided with my invention; Fig. 2, an inverted plan of the top of the bowl detached; Fig. 3, a section on line 3 3, Fig. 2, on an enlarged scale; Fig. 4, a section on line 4 4:, Fig. 3.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates the bowl or reservoir of a lamp, B the inner tube, 0 the wick, D the outer tube, and F the chimneysupporting cap or neck, to which the outer tube D is secured at its lower end, all of which parts may be of any approved form of Argand or central-draft burners.
To the under side of the top a of the bowl A is secured the wick-raising mechanism, and consists of spindles b I), supported at their outer ends in brackets o c and at their inner ends in a compound bracket having legs (1 d and an intermediate step integral with the legs and forms a support for the spindle of revoluble worm-gear G. On the spindles b b are toothed wheels 6 e and ff, which engage the wick O, and gear-wheels H H, which en.- gage the worm-gear, are provided with broad teeth g, whose ends or faces substantially fill the space on the spindle h between the spiral i of the Worm-gear G and prevent slipping or lost motion of the gear. The spindle h passes through a tube is and is surmounted by a head Z to revolve the wick-raising mechanism. The spindle h passes through the top a of the bowl as close to the neck m as practicable to be out of the way of catching in the sleeve of persons operating or passing the lamp.
The worm-gear dispenses with the rod generally used to raise the wick in this class of lamps, and the gear-wheels H H are so secured in operative relation to the worm-gear G that they cannot be displaced or disengaged by any jar to which the lamp may be accidentally or intentionally subjected. Furthermore, the two sets of toothed wheels e f on each spindle b engage the wick on both sides of the vertical center of the wick and feed it evenly,
In constructing the Worm-gear G the spiral i is preferably formed of wire of any desired pitch, is then placed on the spindle h, and secured thereto by solder.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a lamp-wick, of a pair of horizontal spindles provided with toothed wheels engaging the wick, gearwheels on said spindles, a vertical spindle extending through the top of the bowl, and having a worm-gear thereon, and a bracket supporting one end of the horizontal spindles and the vertical spindle between and in engagement with said gear-wheels.
2. The combination with a lamp-wick, of a pair of horizontal spindles provided with toothed wheels engaging the wick, a vertical spindle extending through the top of the bowl and provided with a worm-gear, gear-wheels on the outer ends of the horizontal spindles and having teeth the width of the space between the spiral projection on the worm-gear, and a bracket having arms supporting one end of said horizontal spindles and the vertical spindle between and in engagement with said gear-wheels.
3. The combination with a lamp-wick, of a pair of spindles provided with toothed wheels engaging the wick, gear-wheels on said spindles, a compound bracket supporting one end of the spindles and having an intermediate and integral step, a worm-gear supported on said step and in engagement with the gearwheels.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EUSEBIO F. CABEZOLA.
