Description

(No-Model) J. H. SWIFT.
GARMENT HOOK.
No. 582,444. Patented-May 11, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAY H. SVIFT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GARMENT-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 582,444, dated May 11, 1897.
Application filed April 26, 1895.
To all whom, it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, JAY H. SWIFT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Hooks, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a garment-hook which is formed with a spring-jaw and a short bill and having its parts joined or meeting, so that the hook is practically endless, the advantages being hereinafter set forth.
.Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a hook embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section thereof on line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 4 represents a plan view of an eye member that may be employed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a hook formed of the side members B B, the bill O, the eyes E D, the spring-jaw F, and the terminal portion G, rearward of said jaw F. The bill O is a continuation of the side members B, and the jaw F interlies said side members and is a continuation of the eye D. The portion G is continuous of the rear end of the jaw F and extends to and joins the end of the eye E, as at a, the several parts named being formed of a single piece of wire, it being seen that when the eye member-is seated on the bill the jaw prevents improper displacement of the same.
The jaw F extends obliquely from the inner portion of the eye D over portion of the rear member G, so that its bend which is within the bill is at the center of said bill. Then said back member extends obliquely from said bend to the inner portion of the eye E, so that a twist is imparted to said jaw and member, which imparts great resiliency to said jaw .-the latter being a freedom of motion backward and forward, as the upper end of the rear member and the inner end of the eye E are the ends of the piece of wire of which the device is formed, substantially as described.
It will be noticed that the bill of the hook is made short and the bulging portion of the Serial No. 547,214. (No model.)
jaw F partly enters said bill, whereby the thin wire of the eye member may occupy the small space of the bill, while said member may be readily disengaged by slight pressure or power, so that when the eye member is seated in the bill it may rest safely therein.
On the side members, near the back II of the bill O, are shoulders J, which project in the direction toward the bill, the tendency of which is to deflect the eye member against the jaw, so that said member cannot pass under the jaw, and when it is to be removed it may ride up said shoulders J J and thus more readily press against the jaw and force back the same in order to admit the passage of the eye member through the bill.
As the portion G back of the jaw joins the eye D, which is virtually the ending of the hook at the point or place of commencement of the same, it causes the hook to be formed practically endless, and the ends of the wire are not exposed, which otherwise is an objectionable feature, owing to the liability of the same to cut and scratch the hands and injure.
the garment or article to which the hook is applied.
The front of the eye member K is rightlined, so that said eye member may be hooked into a smaller space than if of oval form.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and Patent, is-
1. A hook having side members with shoulders thereon, a bill continuous of said side members attaching-eyes at the rear of said side members, a jaw continuous of one of said eyes'having a bend at its front between and adjacent to said shoulders, and an under and rearwardly-projecting portion continuous of said bend and terminating near the other edge.
2. A hook formed of a continuous piece of wire, and consisting of the side members B, B, having the shoulders J thereon, the bill 0 connected with the front end of said members and the attaching-eyes D, E, connected with their rear ends, and a jaw F continuous of one of said eyes and between said side members, said jaw having a bend at its front end adjacent to said shoulders J, and an under and rearwardly-projecting portion G, termidesire to secure by Letters nating at the end of the other eye, the bend of said j aw projectinginto the bill of the hook and the parts 'named'being combined substantially as described.
3. A hook having a short bill and side membets, a jaw and back member between said side members, fastening-eyes connected with said side and back members and jaw and l shoulders between said bill and side members, adjacent to the bend of the jaw and rear I0 member, substantially as described.
