ALMOND HOIVARD, OF FIFIELD, IVISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO HARRIS OOIIEN AND ISADORE SMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
CATTLE-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 582,061, dated May 4, 1897. Application filed November 9, 1896. Serial No. 611,523, (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: at of the gates D by pivoted links The Be it known that I, ALMOND HOWARD, a outer ends 0 of said bell-crank levers are procitizen of the United States, residing at Fifield, vid-ed with suitable weights 0, suspended in the county of Price and State of IViscontherefrom, so that the upper ends of said le- 5 sin, have invented certain new and useful vers will be forced normally forward. The 55 Improvements in Cattle-Guards; and I do said gate D comprises angular side bars (1 and hereby declare the followingto be afull, clear, cross-bars 61 said side bars being provided and exact description of the invention, such with the aforesaid projecting plates at, which as will enable others skilled in the art to which are j on rnaled upon the transverse shaft E.
it appertains to make and use the same. The gates at the side of the track, as before 60 This invention relates to improvements in explained, are similar to the gate between the railway'gates, and has more particular relatracks, with the one exception that only one tion to gates intended as cattle-guards. of the pendent arms on the platform is used,
The invention consists of certain novel 0011- as Well as only one bell-crank lever and con- I 5 structions, combinations, and arrangements nection. A pivoted bar G is mounted to the 65 of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more rear of the platform 0, so that it may be turned, fully described and claimed. when so desired, to force one or the other of In the accompanying drawings, forming part its ends under said platform to prevent them of this specification, Figure 1 represents a top descending when a Weight is brought to bear plan view of a section of track with my imupon them, and thus causing the gates to 7c proved gates applied thereto. Fig. 2 reprefly up. sents a central vertical section through the It will be observed from the foregoing same. Fig. 3 represents a detail side elevadescription that should cattle or any other tion of one of the movable platforms and its animals passing along the tracks step upon pendent arms, and Fig. 4 represents a detail any one of the platforms O the latter will be 75 side elevation of one of the gates with its belldepressed, thereby raising the gate D con crank lever and connecting-link. nected thereto through the medium of the A A in the drawings represent the rails; 13 bell-crank lever. Immediately the weight is B, the ties or stringers; O O O, the pivoted removed from said platform the gate descends o platforms, and D D D the movable gates. to its normal position by means of the Weight 80 All of said platforms and gates O I) respec- 0, attached to the outer end of the bell-crank tively operate in substantially the same manlever. ner, and the descriptionof one will therefore If so desired, all of the bell-crank levers be the description of all. The said gates are may be keyed to the shaft E, so that when placed, respectively, between the rails and to any one of the platforms is depressed all of 85 each side of the same, so as to prevent the the gates will be raised simultaneously. passage of cattle along between the rails or in By the employment of my invention the proximity to the sides of the same. The midpassage of cattle along the tracks is absodle platform O is provided at one end with two lutely prevented, as the moment one of the pendent arms 0 c, the upper portions of said same steps upon one of the platforms his progo arms being angular in formation and forming ress is immediately stopped by the elevation longitudinal braces c for said platform. of the gate connected to said platform. hen Each of said arms 0 is pivotally mounted u pon the platforms and gates are in their normal a transverse shaft E, supported in brackets position they lie considerably below the sur- F, secured to the ties B. The lower ends of face of the rails and thus out ofthe way of 5 said arms 0 are pivotally connected to bellany passing train. crank levers c pivotally mounted upon an- Any cattle attempting to pass this gate will othertransverse shaft E, also mounted in said naturally be forced to walk to one side or the brackets F. The upper ends 0 of said bellother, and thus be prevented from passing up crank levers are connected to projecting plates the track, to the danger of the train.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a railway-gate, the combination with a pivoted platform having a pendent arm, of a pivoted gate, a pivoted bell-crank lever connected to the pendent arm, a link connecting said gate and said bell-crank lever, whereby any pressure upon the platform will raise said gate into operative position, and a Weight connected to said bell-crank lever for returning the gate to its normal position, substantially as described.
2. In a railway-gate, the combination with a transverse shaft, of a platform pivotally mounted thereon,'a gate also pivotally mounted on said shaft, a pivoted bell-crank lever, and means for connecting said bell-crank lever to the pivoted gate and the pivoted platform, whereby upon the depression of the latter the former is raised into operative position, substantially as described.
3. In a railway-gate, the combination With i a transverse shaft, of a platform pivotally mounted thereon and provided with pendent arms, a gate also pivotally mounted upon said shaft, pivoted bell-crank levers connecting said gate and said pendent armsrespectively, and Weights also connected to said bell-crank levers, substantially as described.
4:. In a railway-gate, the combination with a transverse shaft, of a platform pivoted on the same and provided with pendent arms, a gate also pivoted on said shaft, pivoted bellcrank levers connected to said pendent arms, pivoted links connecting said bell-crank levers and said gate, and a Weight attached to said bell-crank levers, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALMOND HOWARD.
