RAILROAD PUMP-MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,024, dated December 20, 1887.
Application filed October 6, 1887. Serial No. 251,648. (No model.)

Be it known that I, WILLIAM TIFFANY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ores well, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvenient in Railroad Pump-Motors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in railroad pumpmotors; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l isa top plan view of a railroad pump-motor embodying my iinprovemenis. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is avertical transverse sectional View taken on the linex xof Fig. l. Fig. tis a detail perspective view showing one of the connections between the cam-levers and therockshafts.
AA represents the rails of a rai1way-track of the ordinary construction, supported upon cross-ties B.
C represents a crossbar, of wood or other suitable material, which is arranged transverse] y under the track between two of the ties B, apd on the upper side of the said bar is se? cured a tie-yoke, D, which is made of metal, extends under the lower sides of the trackrail, and has its ends bent upward at right an.- gles to form vertical arms E, which are arranged at slight distances beyond the outer sides of the track-rails. The upper ends of these arms E are slightlylower than the level of the tops of the track-rails.
F represents a pair of levers, which are arranged lengitudinally on the outer sides of the track-rails and bear between thc inner sides of the arms E and the outer sides of blocks G, which blocks are secured on the outer sides of therails. Bolts H extend transversely through the rails A, the blocks G, and the centers of the levers F, and through openings near the upper ends of the vertical arms E, the said bolts serving to connect the rails, the blocks, the levers, and the arms iirmly together, and also forming the pivots or fulcrums on which the levers F turn. rlhe .function of the tieyoke is to prevent the rails from spreadin apart.
The upper sides of the levers F, at opposite ends thereof, are curved, as shown in Fig. 2, and thereby form double cams I. The said cams extend a slight distance above the tops of the rails, and are thereby adapted to be engaged by the treads of the wheels of passing trains. The ends of the levers F are turned downward, as at K, and are bifurcated to form ears L.
M represents a pair of rock-shafts,which eX- tend transversely under the track-rails and are journaledin suitable bearings, N, the said rockshafts being arranged at slight distances beyond the ends of the levers F. Each of the said rockshafts is provided with a pair of inwardvextending arms, O, which are connected to the adjacent ends of the levers F by means of links P. To one end of each rockshaft is attached a cross-bar or lever, R, by means of a set-scrcw, S. The said cross-bars or levers are adapted to be attached to the rods of the pumps which are to be operated by the motor.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The machine is in its normal position when the levers F and the levers R are arranged horizontally, with the cams -I on the upper sides of the levers F, slightly above the tops of the track-rails. Vhen a train passes along the track, each of its wheels' engages alternately with the cams I at each end of the levers F, and thereby causes the said levers F to rock or oscillate in a vertical plane and transmit their motion to the rock-shafts M, and consequently impart rocking or oscillating motion to the cross-bars or levers R, and thereby reciprocate the plungers of the pumps. W'hen it is desired that a train shall pass without operating the pump, this may be accomplished by loosening the screws S, so that the shafts M may rock without imparting motion to the bars or levers R.
I do not limit myself to the use of this motor in connection with pumps, as it is evident that it may be employed to operate other mechanism.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, with the track, of the rocking levers F, having the cams I, adapted to be engaged by the wheels of a passing train, and the rock-shafts M, connected to the levers IOO IC u

2. The combination, with the track-rails, of the rocking levers F, having the cams I at oppositeends, theroek-shaftsM, havingthearrns N, and the links O, connecting said arms to the cam1evers, substantially as described.

The combination, with the track-rails, of the tieyoke arranged under the saine and having the vertical arms E, the double-0am levers F, arranged between the said vertical arms and the track-rails, and the bolts passing trans versely through thetraek-rails,the earn-levers, and the arms E, vfor the purpose set forth, substantially as described. i
