B. DAVEY. FAN ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING GHAIRS.
No. 581,902. 7 Patented May 4, 1897.
EDWARD DAVEY, OF NEW ROCHELLE, NEIV YORK.
FAN ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING-=CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,902, dated May 4, 1897. Application filed July 22, 1896. Serial No. 600,158. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD DAVEY, a subj ect of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of New Rochelle, in the county of Testchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments for Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout both views.
This invention relates to fan attachments for rockingchairs; and the object thereof is to provide animproved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is adapted to be connected with an ordinary rocking-chair; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the device hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accc mpanying drawings form a part, in which Figure l is a side view of a rocking-chair provided with my improved fan attachment, and Fig. 2 a partial section on the line 2 2.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown an ordinary rockingchair provided with a seat 5, and in the practice of my invention I pivotally connect with the outer side of one of the rockers 6 a plate or bar 7, which is provided at its free end, which projects forwardly, with a socket 8,
' which is adapted to receive the spherical head of a rod 10.
The rod 10 is enlarged centrally thereof, as shown at 11, or provided with a cylinder on which is formed a screw-thread 12 of great pitch, and the thread on said cylinder is deep and the walls thereof curved, as shown in Fig. 2, and I also secure to the bottom of the seat of the chair a plate 13, which projects outwardly therefrom and is provided with a circular opening 14, the opposite sides of which are provided with segmentally-ourved inwardly-directed projections 15, which correspond inform with the thread 12, formed in the cylinder or enlarged section 11 of the rod 10.
The upper end of the rod 10, as shown in the drawings, is provided with a plurality of fans 16, of any preferred form, which may be secured thereto in any desired manner, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
The plate or bar '7 works upon a pivot 17 as the rocker moves back and forth, and the rod 10 is free to revolve in the free end of said plate or bar, and as the chair moves back and forth on the rockers 6 said rod 10 moves up and down through the plate 13, and said rod is rapidly revolved by means of the screwthread 12, formed in the cylinder 11, and the inwardly-directed projections 15 on the opposite sides of the circular openings 14 in the plate 13, through which the cylinder or enlarged section of the rod 10 passes.
The thread 12 and the inwardly-directed projections 15 on the plate 13 are so formed that said rod also has a slight forward and back movement as it passes through the plate 13, this movement being necessary in order to accommodate the rod 10 to the up-anddown movement of the plate or bar 7.
The rotation or revolution of the rod 10 operates the fans 16, as will be readily understood, and the lower part of the rod 10 is preferably composed of iron or other metal, so as to give weight thereto,-it being necessary that the lower end of said rod should possess considerable weight in order that the device may properly operate, the downward movement of the rod being accomplished by gravity only.
It will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the resuit for which it is intended.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of the various parts of the attachment herein shown and described, as it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction here in described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a rocking-chair, of a fan attachment which consists of aplate or bar which is pivotally connected at one end With one of the rockers, a rod provided with a spherical head, which is revolubly connected with the inner end of said plate or bar, said rod being provided centrally with an enlarged section or cylindrical portion, in which is formed a thread, and a plate secured to the seat of the chair, and provided with an opening through which said enlarged section or cylindrical portion of the rod passes, said rod being provided at its upper end With a fan or fans, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres- 15 ence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 20th day of July, 1896.
EDWARD DAVEY.
