PATENT ()FFICE.
VINCENNES, INDIANA.
POLE, 84.0., FOR SUSPENDING CURTAINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581 ,621, dated April 27, 1897.
Application filed August 1, 1896- To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS SCHENKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vincennes, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Ii'nprovements in Poles and Suspensory Devices Connected Therewith for Suspending Curtains and the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements, as hereinafter set forth, in poles and suspensory devices connected therewith for suspending curtains and the like.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a per spective view, partly in section, of a solidbodied pole formed of wood or other suitable material and having a longitudinal bore and a slotted or open bottom extending from said bore to the circumference of the pole, this view also showing in position in said pole'one of the curtain supporting and adjusting rollers and a curtain connection in the form of a double hook. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation, partly broken away, of a similar pole sory devices therein. Fig. 3 represents a section on the line 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents an enlarged transverse sectional view of the pole with a solid flanged wheel therein. Fig. 5 represents an end sectional view of a pole formed of a sheet metal tube and having a solid-bodied wheel therein.
The objects of my invention are to dispense with the employment of poles or rods solid throughout their length, of eyed rings surrounding and slidably mounted thereon, and spring or other pins connected with said eyes and adapted to engage with the curtains, and in lieu thereof to produce a tubular pole or rod having a bore equal to the circumference of the wheels traveling therein and having at its base a longitudinal slot or mouth extending through the periphery of said tubular pole or rod, and to provide an adjustable curtain connecting and suspensory device composed of a sectional wheel having a telescopic hub and located and having slidebearing within the tube and one or more curtain hooks or clasps hung upon said sectional Serial No. 601,379. (No model.)
and duahflanged wheel and depending therefrom through the said slot or mouth, any desired number of said wheels and curtain connections being located in the individual tubular pole or rod, according to requirement.
My improved pole or rod for suspending curtains, portieres, and thelike may be formed of either a solid-bodied pole, as shown at 1, with a longitudinal cylindrical bore 2 in the lower portion thereof and a longitudinal slot or mouth 3, extending through the bottom of said bore and also through the adjacent periphery of the solid-bodied pole, or said pole may be in the form of either a cast or sheet metal tube, as i. The bore in each form of pole is of about equal circumference to the circumference of the wheels to be presently described, so that while freedom of movement longitudinally along said bore is permitted to the curtain-suspendin g wheels said wheels will be prevented from oscillation and will always move freely and steadily when adj usting the curtains or other articles supported by said wheels. 5 represents one of the wheels for supporting, with capability of adjustment by sliding longitudinally of said pole, the curtain or other drapery. This wheel is preferably formed in two sections or flat-faced circular disks 6 7 of sheet metal, though the respective sections may be cast or otherwise formed of thicker metal or other material, as preferred, as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, the flat face and other characteristic features of the sheet-metal construction being, however, preserved. The hub of the wheel telescopically connecting the two sections or circular disks 6 7 is formed in two tubular parts 8 9, one, as 8, being of less circum ference than the other, 9, so that the part 8 may telescopically slide within the part 9 or the part 9 slide over the part 8.
As shown in the drawings, the respective hub-sections are of a length to admit, when assembled, of the end of the outer section resting against the inner face of one disk and of the end of the other (inner) hub-section resting parallel with the outer face of the other disk. Consequently the hub-sections are thus firmly braced together and the circular disks also strengthened, braced, and supported 011 the hub-sections and mutually brace each other. \Vhen the wheel is formed of sheet metal, the respective sections may be readily and cheaply stamped into form, and the outwardly extending peripheral beads of the circular disks, affording rotatable bearing, are formed by outwardly curving the edges, as indicated at 11. WVhen the sections of said wheel are formed solid or of thicker material, said peripheral beads would be either cast or stamped solid, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The circumference of the wheel about equals the depth of the tubular bore of the pole in either construction, so as to snugly fit therein with freedom of longitudinal rotary movement and yet prevent sidewise oscillation or vibratory movement. By this means a steady support is afiorded the curtain or other drapery and a free and easy movement and adjustment of the wheels and drapery, and the rattling of the drapery-supports is obviated.
The curtain connection with the pole may be either of hook form, as shown at 12, or of clasp form, as shown at 13. WVhen of hook form, it may be cast or-otherwise formed in a single piece, if desired; but I prefer to form it by centrally bending a length of wire having pointed ends, so as to constitute a loop or eye 14, which fits over and through which the sectional hub of the wheel passes, straight parallel portions 15 16, and a double-curved pair of parallelhooks 17 18, havingoutwardlyextending points 19 20. When of clasp form, any suitable form of clasp may be employed, such, for instance, as shown at 13. The hook form shown. and described, however, is both simple and cheap in construction and is quite eifective.
In practice the hook of the clasp is slid over one member of the tubular hub. The other member of said tubular hub isthen slid into place, thereby securelyinclosing the hook between the flange-sections of the Wheel, and said assembled curtain connection and support and the sectional wheel carrying the same are placed in position by sliding the wheel through the end of the pole with the straight depending portion of the curtainsupport depending through the slot or mou th in the lower part of the pole, as shown in the drawings.
It will be observed that poles according to my invention can be very cheaply and readily constructed, that the curtain-supports can be readily placed in and removed from posi tion therein, that such supports can be cheaply made, that they have easy and free movement at all times within the pole, afiord steady support to the drapery suspended therefrom, that such drapery can be instantly adjusted with great freedom and facility, owing to the exceptionally free movement of the wheels, and that by my construction the marring of the pole by the passage along the exterior thereof is avoided, and the drapery-adjustin g device, as the wheels, is preserved from accumulation of dust.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A curtain-hanger, consisting of a longitudinally-bored pole having a bottom slot or mouth extending longitudinally thereof and connecting the bore and the exterior of the pole, a wheel composed of a pair of circular disks of a circumference approximating the circumference of the bore in the pole and each disk having a rounded bead around its periphery, and a two-part, telescopic, hub, and a curtain connection mounted on said hub and depending through the bottom slot or mouth in the pole, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A curtain-hanger, consisting of a pole having at its lower portion a cylindrical, longitudinally-extendin g bore and a longitudinal slot or mouth extending from the bot-tom of said bore through the adjacent periphery of said pole, the upper portion of said pole being solid, a traveler consisting of a sectional wheel composed of a pair of circular disks having curved peripheral edges and a hub composed of two tubular sections, one of said sections being of greater circumference than the other to admit of telescopic connection between each other and each of said hub-sections being of equal length so that the outer end of the inner section lies parallel with the outer face of one of said disks and the inner end of the outer hub-section rests against the inner face of the other disk, and a curtain clasp or connection having an eyed upper end to engage said hub and a depending portion adapted to slide along said slot or mouth and engage the curtain, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A curtain-hanger, consisting of a pole having at its lower portion a longitudinal bore and a longitudinal slot connecting said bore and the adjacent periphery of the pole, a curtain connection consisting of a wheel composed of a pair of circular disks each having around its periphery an outwardly-extendin g curved bead and of a circumference approximately equal to the bore in the pole, and a hub composed of a pair of tubular sections of inequal circumference to adapt the same to telescopically slide the one on the other and of a length to adapt the end of one hub-section to impinge against the inner face of one disk and the end of the other hub-section to lie parallel with the outer face of the other disk, and a hook composed of a strip of wire centrally bent andhaving a looped upper end and, at its lower portion, a pair of outwardlycurved hooks or points, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS SCHENKER.
