SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,607, dated April .27, 1897.

Be it known that I, ABRAM O. MOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Hot-Water and Steam- Boiler Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in boilers or water-heaters especially adapted for use in heating buildings.
The object of my invention is to arrange the generator in sections so that the sections can be placed side by side and coupled together, each section being directly over the fire-pot and forming the crown and back wall thereof, while the side sections form the sides of the fire-pot and the water-chamber forms the front of the fire-pot.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved steamboiler. Fig. 2is alongitudinal sectional View on the line 2 2, Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View on the line 3 3, Fig. at. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View on the line 4 4, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the center sections of the boiler. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the side sections of the boiler, and Fig. 7 is a view of a modification of my invention.
A is the base of the boiler-furnace, made up of a series of plates bolted together or made in a single casting. Mounted in suitable bearings in this base are the grate-bars a, geared together by wheels a, and one of the bars has an extension o by which the gratebars can be rocked.
The main body of the furnace is made up of the central boiler-sections B and side boilersections D. (Shown clearly in Figs. 5 and 6.) These sections when set up in position form the sides and back of the structure, while the front plate E, which extends from one side plate to the other, forms the front of the structure. The sections and front plate are mounted on the base A and secured together in any suitable manner. In the front plate is the fire-door opening 6, provided with a door E and the flue-opening 6, provided with a door E In the base A is an opening 0, provided with a door 0. Each central section B is made L-shaped, as shown in Fig. 5, the main body of the section extending over the Serial No. 6 08,137. (No model.)

The rib b terminates some distance from the back leg b forming a passage f and the rib terminates some distance from the front and forms a passage f so that the products of combustion pass from the fire'pot up between the tongues and through the passage f into the longitudinal passage f and into the connecting-passagef to the longitudinal passage f into the clowntake G, and out through the extension G to the smoke-pipe G This downtake in the present instance is made of a separate casting bolted to the structure, but may be made an integral part of the structure, as shown in Fig. 7.
A valve 9 may be provided so as to form a direct communication between the downtake and the smoke-stack when it is wished to convey the products of combustion directly to the chimney.
The formation of the central sections in the manner described allows me to provide for the holding in each section of a large quantity of water in a narrow space, which is subjected on each side to the direct action of the products of combustion, and to provide an ample steam-dome. The tongues extending over the fire form long flues for the products of combustion, which pass through the several passages to the smoke-pipe.
The sections are coupled together by tiebolts I I, one passing through the openings 2) in the side walls of the steam-chamber, while the other passes through the openings b in the lower portion of the leg b of the section. The tie-bolts pass through the end sections D D and are provided with nuts, as shown in Fig. 4. These two bolts hold the sections securely together, and the sections at the openings are preferably ground, so as to form ground-joints,making them water-tight. I preferably mount thin washers of asbestos at the joints, so as to insure a tight fit.
It will be noticed by referring to Figs. 4. and 6 that the inner face of the upper portion of each side section D is of the same contour as the sides of the central sections, only deeper, and that the outside shell 61 is inclined, with the exception of an offset at ofthe structure.
the upper end, which is vertical. The inside shell is also inclined. This enables me to make the upper portion of the combustionchamber narrower than the lower portion, so that the water in the side sections will be subjected to the direct action of the products of combustion.
The side chambers of the side sections communicate with chambers (Z at the front and back, so that the combustion-chamber has a water-jacket on three sides, and in the front, directly back of the front plate E, is a waterchamber H, forming what may be termed a water-front, which communicates with one of the side sections h h, as clearly shown in Fig. 6, although in some instances this water-front H maybe connected to an independent set of pipes. Thus by this arrangement the-fire-pot'is entirely surrounded by a water-jacket.

thatall the sediment collected in the upper portion of the sections will pass. to the rear leg and accumulate in the bottom thereof,
:which .forms the mud-drum, as well as the manifold communicating with the returntubes. The tongue of each section is roundedinfront to give head-room at the fire-door.
It will be seen that the fines ff, formed bythe ribs of the section, can be readily cleansed through the opening-ein the front The soot-collected in the upper flue can be dragged to the front and discharged into the lower fine, and the soot of .thetwo fines can then be pushed to the rear and discharged into the fire-pot, so that -it-will:be seen that the fines can be readily cleansed, and the foul matter in the water will be carried tothe mud-drum, owing to the peculiar construction of the section.
Lprovide eachcentral section with an opening .at the top, to which can be coupled a steam-outlet pipe J, so that, when required, two-or more systems can be coupled to the same boiler. Openings are-made in the lower portion of each section, so that the returntubes of the different systems can be coupled .in the same manner, although in some instances-one pipe may be used, in which case the other. openings are closed by suitable caps or plugs, or a manifold may be mounted above the structure to which the several pipes are connected, and this manifold can be coupledat one or more points to the boiler.
Itwill be-understood that the boiler is provided with suitable gages, regulators, &c., which are common to all structures of this type.
I claim asmy invention- 1. The combination of the fire pot, a boiler mounted above the fire-pot and having a series of narrow depending tongues extending into the combustion-chamber from above and directly over the fire-pot, flues communicating with the spaces between the tongues forming the initialpassa-ges to direct theproducts of combustion to the flues, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a hot-water and steam-boiler furnace, of the fire-pot, a boiler mounted above the fire-pot, extensions of the boiler forming side walls and the back of the fire-pot, flues in the boilersection, narrow depending tongues extending over the firepot and communicating withthe top section and the back section of the boiler and forming the initial passages to the fines for the products of combustion, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a steam-boiler furnace, of the fire-pot, the side sections and one or more central sections ,having'depending tongues extending overthe fire-pot, and fines formed in the said sections for the products of combustion, the tongues forming initial passages to direct the products of combustion to the dues, substantially as described.
l. The combination in a steam-boiler furnace, of the fire-pot, the side sections and one or more central sections having depending tongues with solid walls extending over the fire-pot, and flues formed by the said sections for the products of combustion, said flues and tongues being at right angles to the front of the furnace, the passages formed'by the said tongues being the initial passages for the productsof combustion, substantially as described.
5. The combination in a steam-boiler furnace, of the fire-potythe side sections, central sections, flues formed in the side and cenvtral sections for the products of combustion,
each central section having :a depending tongue-extending over the fire-pot, saidportion having an inclined bottom, and a leg;at the rear forming the back of thecombustionchamber, substantially as and for the-,purpose set forth.
6. The combinationina-steam-boilerfurnace, of the side andcentral sections coupled together forming the boiler and sides and rear of the combustion chamber, a front plate forming the front of the combustion-chamber, with an independent water-sectionforming the front wall of the fire-pot and coupled to the boiler proper, substantially as described.
7. The combination ina steam-boilerfurnace,-of the'firepot, side and centralboilersections forming the sides and'back 'of the combustion-chamber, central sections-having depending tongues extending over the .firepot, fiues in the said sectionsfor the products of combustion and a down-flue G at the-back of the central sections, said down-fluecommunicating with the stack, substantiallyas described.
8. A boiler-section havinga portion forming the crown of the fire-box and an integral hollow tongue extending down into the combustion-chamber so that when two or more sections are placed side by side the products of combustion will pass between the tongues to the flues, substantially as described.
9. A steam-boiler section consisting of a casting L-shaped in form having a ribbed body portion and an integral depending tongue adapted to extend over the fire-pot and a back leg connected to the body portion and to the tongue, substantiallyas described.
10. The combination in a steam-boilerfurnace, of the base-section carrying a grate, the hollow side sections and one or more L- shaped central sections communicating with each other and forming the boiler and the combustion chamber, the central sections having narrow depending tongues extending over the fire-pot, fines formed between each section, the spaces between the tongues communicatin g with the fines, and the front plate secured to the front of the boiler and forming the front wall of the combustion-chamber, substantially as described.
11. The combination in a steam-boiler furnace, of the base, the hollow side sections and the hollow L-shaped central sections communicating with the side sections, the side sections being inclined so that the combustion-chamber will be narrower at the top than at the bottom, and a front plate, and fines between the sections communicating with the combustion chamber, substantially as described.
12. The combination in a steam-boiler furnace, of the fire-pot, the grate, the hollow side sections and L-shaped central sections forming the back and side walls of the fire-pot and combustion-chamber, a front plate having a fire-door, an independent water-front extending back of the front plate and forming the front wall of the fire-pot, the said water-front being independent of the side and central sections of the boiler, substantially as described.
